I want to be drawn closer to God. What can I do for that?
I also would like to know what I can draw that others are drawn closer
to God? Especially in the newsgroups? And what might cause them to step
back from God?

Each person's walk with Christ is his/her own. Because of our
different shapes (each of us are uniquely and wonderfully made), my
experience is not likely to help you. This is so that we won't rely on
others but on HIM.

Well, then how can you ever verify that any of these claims about what god
can do, are true?
I mean, what if it's all a bunch of mythic lies, that just hang around
because they are never proven false in a test?

I stepped back because I became someone I never thought
I would be. That flame war a couple Christmas's ago got
inside of me and welled up the anger and my own sins

Psalms provide such good examples in this regard.
The postcard to Ephesus has a prayer on this issue in 3:17-19

This passage says such depth of intimacy is "grant[ed[ ... through His
Spirit".
