Pastoral nomads annually sacrificed a lamb to their moon god,
inviting him to the dinner, which is why the Bible requires it be
completed before the following dawn.
Before moving into a new house, people would smear blood over the
door posts and lintel to make it obvious to the grim reaper that a
death had occurred there, in the hope he wouldn't decide to return
any time soon. And an offering of grain was annually made to the
harvest gods. To honor them, it was eaten in the form they'd
provided, i.e. unleavened.
These traditions, and others, were later integrated into the Exodus
fable that evolved from the tale the Levites brought with them from
Midian about their escape from Egypt.
