So far, we can say that the argument is quite simple although it has
wide-ranging implications. It is based on an analysis of experience, but
it is also based in the experience of what DERRIDA has called
“auto-affection.” We find the idea of auto-affection (or self-affection)
in ancient Greek philosophy, for example in Aristotle’s definition of
God as “thought thinking itself.” Auto-affection occurs when I affect
myself, when the affecting is the same as the affected.

DERRIDA frequently writes about autobiography as a form of
auto-affection or self-relation. In the very late The Animal that
Therefore I am, DERRIDA tells us what he is trying to do with
auto-affection: “if the auto-position, the automonstrative autotely of
the ‘I,’ even in the human, implies the ‘I’ to be an other that must
welcome within itself some irreducible hetero-affection (as I [that is,
DERRIDA] have tried to demonstrate elsewhere [my emphasis]), then this
autonomy of the ‘I’ can be neither pure nor rigorous; it would not be
able to form the basis for a simple and linear differentiation of the
human from the animal” (The Animal that Therefore I am, p. 95).

Always, DERRIDA tries to show that auto-affection is hetero-affection;
the experience of the same (I am thinking about myself) is the
experience of the other (insofar as I think about myself I am thinking
of someone or something else at the same time). But, in order to
understand more fully the basic argumentation, let us look at three of
these “other places” where DERRIDA has “attempted” to show that an
irreducible hetero-affection infects auto-affection. [@2]

contemptuous cursing with no commitment to the objective certainty of

more than having, out of a respect for an eminent educational
institution and its publications, provided the history faculty with an
outcome of concern derived from our informal research (ie. our like
circumstance as the habitual denial of justice as similarly the product

us from such life opportunity).

Nevertheless, the dignity which is the University of Oxford as
exemplified by its motto: DOMINUS ILLUMINATIO MEA (Latin for 'The Lord
is my light') is the incipit (opening words) of Psalm 27 and has been in
use there since at least the second half of the sixteenth century, and
it appears in the coat of arms of the university.

The University of Oxford is a collegiate research university in Oxford,
England. There is evidence of teaching as early as 1096, making it the
oldest university in the English-speaking world and the world's
second-oldest university in continuous operation. It grew rapidly from
1167 when Henry II banned English students from attending the University
of Paris.

An article written in 2000 by the Roman Catholic priest and theologian
Ivan Illich (1926–2002) may help to explain this ancient university
motto, at a time when scientists were progressively replacing the
concept of vision as a gaze radiating from the pupil by the concept of
vision as the retinal perception of an image formed by reflected sunlight:

light" must be understood. This is the century [i.e., the thirteenth
century] suffused by the idea that the world rests in God's hands, that
it is contingent on Him. This means that at every instant everything
derives its existence from his continued creative act. Things radiate by
virtue of their constant dependence on this creative act. They are

Similarly DERRIDA lays out the etymology of the Latin word “religion”
(he acknowledges that the etymology is problematic). The etymology
implies that there are “two sources” of religion: “religio,” which
implies a holding back or a being unscathed, safe and sound; and
“re-legere,” which implies a linking up with another through faith
(Religion, p. 16).

We can see in this etymology the inseparable dualities we examined
above: singular event and machine-like repeatability; auto-affection as
hetero-affection. Most importantly, DERRIDA is trying to understand the
“link” that defines religion prior to the link between man as such and
the divinity of God [as GODHEAD or NOUMENON to which we resonance as
neural linguistic / temporal linkage].

What we can see in this attempt to conceive the link as it is prior to
its determination in terms of man and God is an attempt to make the link
be as open as possible. [@2]

If only those ancient #379 - *STONES* could talk and #285 - *TEACH* on
that the notion COURSE-trochos OF NATURE-genesis [JAMES 3:6; TDNT 1933,
VOL I: 682-685] being a hypothetical “scene of origin” that takes this
mechanism as the epistemological basis for its anthropology.

RICHARD VAN OORT in EPISTEMOLOGY AND GENERATIVE THEORY: DERRIDA, GANS,

that the DERRIDEAN critique of a “metaphysics of presence,” economically
