I'm in a little trouble with calculation of my Kua number. Some rules say
that I should add last two digits of my birh year, then add them toegether
if they are greater than 9 and the result substract from 10. I've found some
fine programs to calculate it too and the resuls are different! What is my
correct Kua number ?
My birthdate is: 6 April 1977
It calculates to Kua=5 ( 7+7=14 -> 1+4=5 -> 10-5=5 ), two other, different
programs ( FS100, ... ) calculates my Kua=2 ( Kun diagram ). Which is
correct ?
Great thanks

Feng Shui ABC's, Computing Annual/Life Gua Numbers
This discourse contains several methods for calculating the Annual
Star (Number) and your Life Gua Number. Here are a few "rules":
1. The Annual Number for any year is the same as the Life Gua
for Males.
2. The Annual/Male Life Gua Number progresses in a Yin or reverse
direction. But, the Annual Star "floats/flies" in a Yang direction
in a Xuan Kong (flying star) Chart.
3. The Life Gua Number for Females progresses in a Yang or forward
direction.
4. The Number 5 is the Central Palace and it is not directly
associated with a particular Trigram.
5. If the Male Number is a 5, then we use 2 as the Life Gua Number.
6. If the Female Number is a 5, then we use 8 as the Life Gua Number.
7. If your Life Gua Number is 1, 3, 4, or 9, then you are an "East
Group" person.
8. If your Life Gua Number is 2, 6, 7, or 8, then you are a "West
Group" person.
9. In very general terms, those in the East Group will be more
compatible with East Group people. And, they will be more
compatible with houses that SIT to the North, East, SE, and South.
10.In very general terms, those in the West Group will be more
compatible with West Group people. And, they will be more
compatible with houses that SIT to the SW, West, NW, and NE.
11.Li Chun (Spring Begins) is always on either February 4 or on
February 5, every year. So, if you were born before February 4,
then you must use the previous year. For instance, if your
birthday is January 20, 1966 then you will use 1965 as your
"Chinese" year of birth.
These methods are listed here in the order in which they appeared in
my inbox. The first one is courtesy of Master Joseph Yu of Toronto.

The Eight Types of People According to Birth Year
Male and female use different formulas.
Male born between 1900 and 2000 (e.g. 1955):
1. Subtract birth year from 2000.
2000 - 1955 = 45
2. If the resulting number is greater than 9, add up the digits.
4 + 5 = 9
3. If this number is less than 10, then this is your gua number.
4. For a male born between Feb 4, 1955 and Feb 4, 1956, his gua
number is 9.
This is because Feb 4, 1955 and Feb 5, 1956 are Spring Equinoxes.
If the number is 5, then take 2 as the gua number.
For males, convert gua number 5 to 2.
Female born between 1900 and 2000 (e.g. 1955):
1. Add all the digits.
1 + 9 + 5 + 5 = 20
2. Add 4 to this number.
20 + 4 = 24
3. If this number is greater than 9, add up the digits.
2 + 4 = 6
4. If this number is less than 10, then this is your gua number.
For a female born between Feb 4, 1955 and Feb 4, 1956, her gua
number is 6.
If the number is 5, then take 8 as the gua number.
For females, convert gua number 5 to 8.
NOTICE: Master Yu also offers this more simplified method for
calculating the Annual/Male Number:
The formula for males is better simplified to read :
Subtract the last two digits of the year of birth from 100 ..
For years between 2000 and 2099, it should read :
Subtract the last two digits of the year of birth from 99 ..
The above formulas appear in Master Yu's Intermediate Correspondence
Course in Lesson 05, Page 5-1. For those who hate formulas, he has
provided a chart of all the Life Gua Numbers, for Males and Females,
for the years 1900 to 1999. The chart is on page 5-2.
The next formula is courtesy of Master Larry Sang of the American
Feng Shui Institute (via Lorraine Wilcox):
Male Formula
Add up the four digits (xxxx) of the birth year.
Then, divide the sum (X) by 9.
Subtract the remainder (Y) from 11.
The resulting number (Z) determines the Personal Trigram.
NOTE:
If the remainder (Y) is 0 [zero], treat the 0 as a 9.
If the resulting number (Z) is a 5, a male would then belong to
the Kun Trigram (2).
Female Formula
Add up the 4 digits (xxxx) of the birth year.
Divide the sum (X) by 9.
Add 4 to the remainder (Y).
The resulting number (Z) determines the Personal Trigram.
NOTE:
If the remainder (Y) is 0 [zero], treat the 0 as a 9.
Use the resulting number (Z) to subtract 9 if the resulting
number (Z) is larger than 9.
If the resulting number (Z) is a 5, a female would then belong to
the Ken Trigram (8).
NOTE: The above formula also works after the year 2000.
The next formula is courtesy of Master Yap Cheng Hai in Malaysia
(via Joey Yap).
Male:
Take last 2 digits of the Year and add them together, until you
reach a single number.
For Males, subtract from 10.
example: Male born 1956.
= 5 + 6
= 11
= 1 + 1
= 2
= 10 - 2
= Gua 8.
Female:
instead of Subtracting from 10, ADD 5.
example: Female born 1959
= 5 + 9
= 14
= 1 + 4
= 5
= 5 + 5
= 10
= 1 + 0
= Gua 1

Sacramento, California. :-)
If you abhor formulas, here is a quick conversion chart to convert
the male numbers of the years to the female numbers of the years.
In other words, if you know only a method to compute the male life
gua, this chart will show you the female life gua numbers.
Male Female
5 1
4 2
3 3
2 4
1 5 1999 Year.
9 6
8 7
7 8
6 9
This one came in after the above methods had been posted. It is
provided courtesy of list member Marie-Pierre Dillenseger:
DIFFERENT WAY FOR CALCULATING LIFE KUA FOR FEMALE:
Calculate the male Kua as indicated above. Subtract the male Kua
number from 15 to obtain the female one.
In the above example: In 1956, the male Kua is 8. For female,
do 15 - 8 = 7
In this method, the calculation of the female Kua is always based on
that of the male. You do not need further adjustment for the century
once you have the male one right.
Hope this is useful! Marie-Pierre Dillenseger
(Ray: So, if you want to avoid adjustments between different
centuries the "best" method may be to use Master Sang's method
for the Male/Annual Life Gua number, and Marie-Pierre's (Subtract
from 15) "trick" to obtain the Female number.)
This ends the discourse on the Annual/Life Gua/Personal Trigram
Numbers.
