We do a lot of paint painting here.
Use acrylic paints (non toxic and clean up easily as they are water based) .........found at any craft type store. And use clear Urethane/varathane as a finish. If your pots are going to be placed outside, put on 3-4 coats of your finish. You can purchase this as a spray at your craft store, or go to your decorating store and purchase a small can (cheaper in the long run).-cj-

Helen, I suspect you didn't put on enough coats of varnish(varethane/urethane).
You need a minimum of two coats (dry between each coat)...and if outside pots, do at least 3-4 coats(I tend to do 5-6 coats myself).
The other thought I had is that perhaps your varnish was possibly very old or improperly stored(lid not sealed well enough)? .cj
