There are several studies that involve the pitch or tenor of voices
and what propagates and does not propagate on the standard
HAM voice frequencies. Deep, rich, base and baritone voices
propagate the best while high pitched (squeaky) voices hardly
propagate at all.

This is proven by DXers who monitor HAM frequencies only
hearing one side of a conversation which side consists of the
deep base or baritone voice. The other side of the conversation
is often not heard at all. This is most likely because of a high-
pitch, female-sounding voice on that end. That is also the
reason there are so few female HAMs.

This is also the reason the FCC won't license children - their
voices are too high-pitched and don't propagate over the
airwaves.

So, I don't think poor Emmett will have much luck trying to
carry on a HAM frequency conversation. It will be the rare,
close-by station that can even hear his side of a conversation.
If you squelch down enough to try to hear him the static will
drown him out. It's practically hopeless.

women's voices carry better on radio waves

Wrong! I'm not talking radio waves in general. I'm talking about
the HAM frequencies which are 'SHORT WAVE.'

Short waves as a carrier of short frequency voices tend to
eliminate or 'chop off' much of the wavelength unless the
wavelengths are somehow synchronized. There's just no
way to synchronize the voice with the carrier wave.

i am a two way radio operator and i know what i hear better ,
women oscillate the microphone ceramic head much faster than ,
a deep voice does and when you're dealing with amplitude modulation powered
radio wave high pitch is the way to go have you ever heard a test pattern on
tv , how about a smoke detector , i'm telling you high pitch rules

Tell that to Rush Limbaugh and Art Bell and other deep-voiced radio
operators. Their voices are more like voices and less like the background
noise.

A mighty short list. Is that because the much longer list of males
won't fit through the door of that short bus you're riding in?

Sorry, but AM/FM radio personalities have totally different
and MUCH BROADER frequencies in which to ply their
trade, not to mention high-wattage transmitters.

HAM frequencies are VERY NARROW and highly-prone
to atmospheric conditions that limit or interfere with their
skipping off the ionosphere. Sun spots, for example, often
wreak havoc with HAM band transmissions, sometimes
wiping them out entirely. This never happens to AM/FM radio.

Wrong:

http://tech.slashdot.org/story/11/10/23/1652227/why-computer-voices-are-mostly-female

"Academic studies always show that we prefer female voices, but in reality,
those who count on computer generated voices all day prefer male voices. Note
all the readers mentioning James Earl Jones. The reason studies like this get
it wrong is simple. They get random groups of people who never use computer
voices to take part in their experiments, and such people initially prefer
female voices. If the experiments were to run long enough for participants to
become expert listeners, they would find they trend towards male voices. I do
a lot of looking at speech signals, and my unsupported theory as to why we
switch to male voices is that male voices cover a broader portion of the sweet
spot in our hearing, where we perceive sound most sensitively. This makes male
voices easier to listen to if you have to listen for long periods of time.
They are also easier to understand in noisy environments, thus thus the
classic low male ham radio voice."

HAM radio is a very noisy environment. This is mostly due to interference by
same-frequency
atmospheric radio waves mostly from the sun but sometime generated by the
Earth's magnetic
field.

Sorry but they don't skip off the ionosphere like HAM band
frequencies do. They don't have sufficient power. When they
skip it is off temper inversions, cloud bases, etc in the
lower atmosphere.
