Remember: vote early and vote often. Polls close on Wednesday
17th, when I am supposed to have made my 'decision'.
Candidate A: Looks like one of those chicks in a porno movie
before they take their glasses off and shake their hair out. An
MCSE but hilariously low level of technical ability. Nice tits.
Potential Disaster Scenario: powers off Corebuilder 3500 to plug
in her hairdryer.
Candidate B: Classic thirtysomething paper MCSE. Currently
repairs vending machines. Has a three node home network but
precious little idea how things operate outside his
basement 'Data Center'. Also had one of those little Jesus fish
lapel pins.
Potential Disaster Scenario: Initiates glassy eyed conversations
about the origins of the universe around the water cooler.
Candidate C: Hugely obese Star Trek fanboy. Better technical
knowledge than B. At the end of the interview made a call on his
cell phone saying, "Mom, it's just desktop not server, what
shall I do?". He is over forty.
Potential Disaster Scenario: Gets caught making Captain Janeway
porn in Photoshop.
Candidate D: A stoner who looked just like Jay of 'Jay and
Silent Bob' fame. Every other word out of his mouth
was 'motherfucker'. Freely disclosed the fact that he had just
finished 10 months in jail for beating the shit out of his
girlfriend. No MCSE but technically good. Read Minasi cover to
cover while he was 'down'.
Potential Disaster Scenario: He starts giving blow jobs for a
pack of Kools a time in the men's bathroom.

C would probably be more stable than D, but it sounds like D's technical
knowledge might be superior.
Personally, I don't see a problem with slightly personalities as long as
they get the job done.

I'd make a decision to quit, screw that.
Is the hire going to be working directly with you? If so, do you get
overtime? <hint hint> Might be a golden opportunity to score some bucks
before you bail.

Take this one, B...reasons...less potential for harm, overall. Also, a
Rooster Cogburn (John Wayne) quote from True Grit, paraphrased...he
"reminds me of me". He has technical experience, no matter how it is
regarded (I hope that my electronics experience is not dismissed in
any attempt I make to get an IT job), and the initiative to build his
own home network should be respected. Give him extra points again if
he has ever tried to interface his home network with a vending
machine; that would show both vision and initiative. Given a chance,
he may rise to the challenge. How long of a probationary period does
your company have? Give him goals to meet before the probation ends,
and watch him go. He'll do the little extra things outside of paid
hours to enable him to succeed.
Tom
The other people sound like total losers. Nerd boy, momma's boy and
bad boy, respectively.
How much are you paying and where are you located? I'll possibly take
the job.

Before you buy.
Call the recruiter and ask for more candidates. Ask them to try for a better
caliber this time. If you work in the minor leagues, that's one thing. If
you work in the pro's, it's another.
Dave
Women tend to learn faster than men,(at least thats what my wife tells me), she
will probably be fairly loyal, won't mind the OT
and there's always the Nice Tits issue.
Fat Boy will take long lunches, constantly be calling mommy, missing work
because of stomach ailments and will be looking for a Real MCSE position before
long.
Don't even consider the stoner...theres always the possibility of him going
postal after he learns he has to pull OT and he has plans of "toking" that
night.
Last but certainly not least...Forget the religious nutcase.
I don't trust anyone that finds it necessary to display his religion...trust
me, before long there will be problems with him telling you the wonders of God
or Jesus or whatever his "Sect" pushes and he won't take no for an answer when
he asks you to attend a Prayer meeting or Buy a Watchtower from him.
I have nothing against religion, just its members.
All major wars have been directly attributed to religious matters.
Good Luck recruiting...its a no win situation for you.

I would probably pick B because he seems to have the most potential. He has
earned a MCSE on his own. As far as his religion is concerned, it shouldn't
really matter unless he's in some strange cult.
I hope that those suggesting you pick A because she has "nice tits" are
kidding.
But if she is trashy looking and does not work out, it will reflect poorly upon
you.
People may think you hired her for the wrong reasons and this will not help
your reputation.
In a tight labor market you are going to have to train, so I'd pick the
candidate who I thought was the most motivated or had the highest IQ. And I
would exclude D because he seems antisocial.

You can't really tell from the post though. But what you can
tell is that
A: Didn't seem to do anything terribly wrong during the
interview, except having the wrong chromosomes.
B: Wore a Jesus Lapel Pin. Didn't necessarily talk about it.
C: Called his mother on his cell phone (during the interview?)
D: Discussed his record of assault against his girlfriend.
Pretty stupid obviously, but, if you look at Korben's attitude
towards women, obviously the right thing to say in this
circumstance. It seems to have convinced Korben that his
technical knowledge was superior (it's really unlikely that he
read Mark Minasi in prison).
Then again, this post is probably just a troll.

I vote for candidate D:
1) Bound to be more interesting than the others
2) Is sure to reduce the number of problems raised by the users
(particularly the serial whingers) making the job easier for any
replacements
3) May be useful in arranging death or injury should you find youself
in need of such services
4) Is technically competent (this is your criteria, when they whinge
about the serial killings you say "but I don't understand the alcohol
processing units, and anyway, what is wrong with killing them? He
scored highest on the technical competency test I set them all..."
5) Do you really want your boss to get you to do these little
selections by yourself any more times?
I suppose, if you don't count a "hilariously low level of technical ability"
as terribly wrong.
What do her chromosomes have to do with it? Is it because he said she had
nice tits? Looks like a physical observation to me, right up there with
"hugely obese" and "he looks like Jay". Are you one of those PC people who
are so afraid of saying the wrong thing that you can't even compliment a
nice feature of another person?
In any case, I thought his post was hilarious. "...Janeway porn in
Photoshop..." Classic. The "blowjobs for a pack of Kool's" was right up
there too. Great stuff.
By the way, if someone with a "hilariously low level of technical ability"
is your idea of the best candidate, it's no wonder it took you so long to
find a job.

I still have you so angry from two months ago you're not even
reading my post correctly.
If you'll notice the phrases "read between the lines" and "can't
tell only by his post." I'm basically saying that I don't
believe Korben's assessment of candidate A. She might have had
a "hiliriously low level of technical ability" but it's also
possible that Korben's attitude towards women doesn't allow him
to see clearly enough to make an accurate judgement.
Perhaps you should cool down a bit. You're letting a personal
grudge against me make a fool out of you.
And yes, as I'm sure you'll remind me, I supposedly put you into
my kill file a few months ago. Unfortunately there are no kill
files in Remarq, but I find that it's easier to keep track of
posts using a web based newsreader than with Outlook Express or

I'll have to put up with.
No loss. I obviously piss you off a lot more than you piss me
off.

Low technical ability
Has MCSE though
Worth considering, but B sounds better.

Yes
Has paper MCSE
Repairs vending machines (ability to solve technical (even electrical)
problems
Has set up own network
The job is for desktop support tech, not network
administrator/engineer. He should do fine.
Okay, so he has the little fish pin. As I do not believe any god, I
scratch my head at these people. On the good side, god (God to them)
can act as an excellent internal policeman, governing their behavior.
They will not curse and will be as nice as possible.
As far as the potiential disaster scenario. It's best to agree to
disagree with these people. Their beliefs are based on faith, not
facts. An intelligent conversation is not possible. IHMO How do I
know this? My wife stops just short of wearing a pin.

No way. He cannot make decisions (without his mother's help of
course), which is a very important quality to have. He's already
bitching about the position. His being over forty and still living
with his mom spells social misfit. He is not able to interact with
others, except for possibly other trekkers. sp?

1. Either get A & B in for a really tough second technical interview
or arrange with your weasle supervisor or agency to get some better
candidates. (Yes, I'm including A, in the spirit of Erin Brockavich...)
2. Make the best decision you can. Let it be clearly known that it
was you who faced the gun without flinching. And if you get the
opportunity, do some more of the responsibilities of your supervisor,
do it better than he can, until you've taken the job away from the
punk.
I've faced this myself, except I had the added pleasure of firing
employees when the decicision "had to be made and executed" while he
was on vacation. I got what experience I could from the job and jumped
ship. My supe was later forced out.

Point one. We have no idea about the real level of candidate A's
technical knowledge. We only see her through the eyes of Korben
Dallas (am I the only one who sees this?).
Point two. If I'm interviewing you for a job and you brag to me
that you did time for beating up your girlfriend, I throw you
out of my office, no further questions or discussions. In real
life, if I meet a woman beater, I don't question him about Mark

1.) He's unable to stand up to his boss. Nothing against him
here. Most of us have a hard time doing this.
2.) He obviously isn't "getting enough" in real life, or he
would have been able to interview candidate A without imaging
her as a character in a porno movie.
3.) And this is the point that bothers me the most. He seems to
have a giggly schoolboy admiration for candidate D. He's already
imagining him down on his knees giving blowjobs. Sounds like a
real schoolboy crush to me.
In article <14c88a3e...@usw-ex0105-034.remarq.com>,
1.) She was totally in control of the interview. Her level of
technical knowledge was "laughably low" but she knew how to give
off the kind of signals that would make him believe that he
actually had a chance with her, and, thus, at least get onto his
short list. Perhaps she wasn't even very attractive but knew the
right kind of body language to grab the attention of her
obviously immature interviewer.
2.) He was totally in control and made a fool out of her. Her
level of technical knowledge wasn't laughably low. Possible. He
did say she had an MCSE. Interesting how only 9% of all MCSE's
are women but well over half the examples of technically
illiterate "Paper MCSEs" in this group are women. Perhaps she
was very attractive, but, in spite of all of her efforts to look
professional, couldn't get little Korben to take her seriously
("She looked like one of those chicks in a porno movie before
she shakes out her hair and takes off her glasses.").
The whole issue of whether being an attractive woman increases
your chances of being hired is more than a double edged sword.
It is possible that you can be an attractive woman who's
technically astute, technically illiterate, or all degrees in
between. After all, I see some male computer professionals who
look like Brad Pitt, some who look like candidate C. Looks
really don't have much bearing on your intelligence.
So does it increase her chances of getting a job. It both
increases and decreases them. Increases them because some man
might hire her because he "likes her tits." Decreases them
because for all of her (possible) technical knowledge, no man
will see beyond her "nice tits."
And her looks could also cause resentment in a female
interviewer.

Have you counted the number of people who didn't post A ?
I can't imagine why you guys (Stan and Absinthe) didn't take
that as a joke (although it's true). I try my best not to use
others, except to learn from them.
Of course, the boob guys didn't answer my post. They are trying
to avoid the reality by making a joke about what makes them feel
uncomfortable--women with boob power. Allie McBeal's 'Ling'
character illustrates my point in several episodes.
I believe my whole point is/was...that you can't change the
world. You either manipulate the current, go with the current,
or get swallowed by the current.
People suck. They pick illogical job candidates. They pay them
more money than you.
Why do you think Hollywood can exist? Skinny girls with big
tits and unreal guys with six packs and great hair. I don't see
either of these in real life often, but let's face it...
you can't go wrong hiring these stereotypes. I worked for a
company that had many competent workers...but sales were down,
so a new manager was hired to replace the 50-something, fat
woman with excellent credentials. Her replacement? White guy
with management hair! Who subsequently hired at least 15
blondes, male and female. Even the white folks noticed that the
blonde to brunette ration was almost 20 to 1! Suddenly, sales
went up. He also preferred the stereotypical techie white guy
to replace me (the manager--a prejudiced prick from Indiana--was
uncomfortable with me for some reason). I went on to bigger and
better things, but I trained this guy, to make less than me.
Anyway...life's not fair, good looking people have more
opportunities, and techies, however logical they may be, are
still just as stupid about their own prejudices as the rest of
the population.
So...I lost 30 lbs., emphasize my breasts, wear makeup, and let
my hair grow back to shoulder length so I could earn the money I
make now.
My soul no longer suffers from the cognitive dissonance. I
realize that I am one of the privileged few that enjoys a
significant advantage over others. And that de-emphasizing
my 'assets' made me the loser...at least now I can afford to
take a vacation and I can work from home now and hang out in
newsgroups, naked!
This is your world. Get used to it. It really sucks.
Sharkfish
My world isn't perfect but I at least hold out some hope that
men and women can relate to each other in a non-manipulative
way.
To tell you the truth, most people don't stand out one way or
the other, as very good looking or very unattractive. They tend
to become that way as you get to know them.
Imagination has a lot to do with it.
I've got a Patti Smith tape in my Walkman not a Brittany Spears
tape.
Of course, I want everyone to be chosen for a particular job on their merit
and performance. It just doesn't happen that way. I think you would agree
that this phenomena occurs in YOUR world, too.
Unfortunately, while my personal life is as close as I can get it to the
ideal, my work life/world is not anywhere near this ideal. And your choice
of Patti Smith over Brittany is admirable..although I would hope that your
choice of art/music/leisure is something above the teenage variety.
Sharkfish
P.S. I am currently a Jason Kidd (the basketball player) and Lenny Kravitz
(musician) fan...they look good AND are talented! Not to mention
Borg-ian...mixed race backgrounds, like me.
Hmmm...maybe that's why my world is a little different...being of obviously
mixed race background makes others concentrate more on my appearance.

Being of Polish/German American decent, I can assure you my
family if full of overweight, unattractive blonds.
As to the question of looks in general.
I think that looks will sometimes help you but they will also
hurt you sometimes.
They're one factor among many.
For example, suppose that I were 6'5" tall instead of 5'11". I
suppose that this would get me jobs (give me a certain
authority) but also lose me jobs (intimidate people. The server
guys here are all under 5'10 so the Napolean complex seems to be
at work).
I don't know about looks. I'm probably better looking than
average but I'm also much WEIRDER than average. My misfit
personality has always cancelled out my more or less
traditionally acceptable appearance.

Once upon a time, usenet was a polite and informative experience. Then
they brought in *.edus so that they would learn to be polite and to be
informed, and you can guess what happened. A bit later, a company
called aol started opening up the web to the general public, as a sort
of replacement for BBSs.
The new brood were typified by a fake poster called B1...@aOL.coM who
would post his experiences in trying to find "pron" or whatever. At
the time, posting with an aol address was "unwise" since even Albert
Einstein would have had no respect from the rest of the posters if he
had used an aol account - people generally didn't even bother reading
their posts and the killfile was made virtually universal by the end
of the period. Many people probably believe that it stands for
"Assholes On Line".
Since then we have seen the advent of WebTV. I dunno what this is,
exactly, but I guess some sort of internet on your television set. The
advantage to such a device is that the old filtering technique, that
is make the newsgroups so difficult to get at means that the clumsiest
and stupidest posters are unable to successfully send messages and so
do not cause a problem, this advantage is no longer keeping them away
from our groups.
Some people have *.webtv set up in their killfilters. Not that there
are no good posters on webtv, merely that the few are not worth
wading through posts from the many to read.
Personally, I don't have a killfile, but if I was setting up an
account for my mother, I would put *.aol and *.webtv into the filters.
;)
There are more Polish jokes going around then there are tall black men selling
sneakers.
Anyway, If you close your eyes real tight an asshole on AOL looks exactly like
an asshole on any other bogus, fly by-night, wanna be, won't be around too much
longer never heard of it anyway ISP,(ntlworld.com?????).
I've tried em all and they all do the same shit..
Besides my kids love it,(Oh you don't have kids...what a shame...too bad), you
should get away from the computer every so often and try dating someone from
the opposite sex for a change of pace.

use the AOL newsreader? I thought it was idiot proof.
But let's look at your post:
1.) One ethnic slur
2.) One borderline racial slur
3.) A whole paragraph full of inane homophobic remarks.
Completely bigoted, low IQ idiocy.
This completes our AO-HELL demonstration for today.
Just as a sidenote. I honestly don't care what ISP you use. But
you CAN set up more than one ISP on one computer. Get somebody
to show you how to do it if you can't figure it out. If the $20
a month is too much for you try one of the free ISPs.
And lose that mullet.

Again you have the wrong person...........maturity is not a problem in Tom's
case. However, it appears to be so in yours.

I doubt very much Tom lives in a trailer, but he might.

Again I believe you meant Stanley here, but being a consumer of
Literature I doubt he is into Kiddie Porn. Although I am sure there are
experts lurking in a near by newsgroup.

A Mullet maybe a fish, I dunno. And this was the only question Tom asked.
However, and I am reaching considering the intelligence of you. Flaming the
wrong person and calling them a moron for asking for clarification to a
topic that has yet to be adequately defined gives you an even lower IQ than
a Moron. In fact this terminology would in fact be a complement when applied
to you.
>Suey...look Tommy dropped the soap again.
And once again here I believe the faggot reference was directed to Stanley
who had baited you on this very topic.
All I can say is you need to learn to properly address your missives to the
appropriate thread and at least learn to read and comprehend the thread
prior to hitting the send button in your newsreader.
This has been your AO-HELL tutorial for this afternoon.....If you had any I
would say class dismissed.

There was nothing in any of my posts that warrants this from you. I
was simply asking questions for my own edification. I knew that the
word mullet referred to a fish, because I looked it up in the
dictionary; I thought there may be another more current meaning. I
defy you to point out one statement of mine in this thread which any
intelligent person would see as an attack against you. I will admit to
having not defended you either, but you seem quite capable of
defending yourself, even if it's sometimes against the wrong person.
:-)

I bet Adam and Eve weren't very old either...or were they?
