hi,

will someone be kind and explain in laymans term what is STP, spanning
tree protocol. I am having a very difficult time understand this.

Much appreciated.

Where two bridges are used to interconnect the same two computer
network segments, the spanning tree protocol allows the bridge to
exchange information so that only one of them will handle a given
message that is being sent between two computers within the network.
The spanning tree protocol prevents the condition known as a bridge
loop.
Check out http://www.whatis.com for a moredetailed answer.

Consider 4 bridges connected in a circle, A B C & D.
Bridge A will know about Bridge C via both Router B and Router D as both B&
D are directly connected. This is a akin to a routing loop. Spanning tree
protocol defines which ports this information is enabled on to create a loop
free topology.

In pure simple laymans terms, all STP is, is a Protocol (a way of doing
things) that avoids a problem called network loops. It does this by
selecting a "root bridge" (basically one single bridge on the network) that
decides on network topology and how data will be forwarded.

I'll leave further technical explanations to the rest of the newsgroup.

Its a way to keep from having network loo... oh, I think the other 5 people
said it as good as I could have.
