Hi folks,

My family and I are thinking of moving to the Phoenix area sometime in the
future. I've seen all the salary surveys for that area, but I wonder what
the "true" market pay for jobs like HDesk, LAN Admin, etc. is. If one or
more of you live in that area, please reply to this newsgroup and give me
some idea as to what I might expect to earn. I'm working on the Hdesk now
but with a little education (and certification) I hope to move into
something a bit more rewarding.

Thanks

Go west young man! Further west that is. Phoenix is an awfull
wasteland of heat and stupidity. The desert is lovely, Tucson is quite
nice, but Phoenix is truly hell.

I've heard Flagstaff was a good environment. I liked my visit there.
I have no idea about jobs there.

I must partially disagree with this post. I'm currently in Phoenix and though
there is much heat during the summer... there are no more stupidity here that
anywhere else in the U.S.!
The technical job maket is great here. There are always good jobs with good
saleries being offered in the paper and online.

Phoenix is one of the fastest growing cities because of it's job market.

Chris...

Enjoying my 80 degree March and April days.

I really disagree...I grew up in Phoenix and it used to be a great place to
live back in the 60s & 70s but, with all the air pollution, traffic jams,
THE HEAT, and there really does seem to be a great many stupid people (from
California and the East Coast) now living in the Maricopa county area. You
may want to know, Arizona is a "right to work state" which means, wages are
comparatively lower than in other states.

Also, there really isn't that many "Big" high tech companies in the Phoenix
area like there is in California, Oregon and Washing state....But, PLEASE
DON'T COME TO OREGON!!

Maybe I overstated the case a bit... I don't mean to imply that *everyone*
in AZ is stupid but this is the state that elected Evan Mecham and Fife
Symington as governors, WOW! what a pair. And, of course they built those
two stadiums for Jerry Colangello... and grass lawns are considered normal
in the desert, and "desert landscaping" consists of uprooting all the native
vegetation and replacing it with colored gravel and cacti native to central
Mexico.
On the plus side, they *did* try to legalize medical marijuana, that was a
surprise.

If you want to see some of the finer specimens of the vally of the sun take
a drive around Sunnyslope or Apache Junction.. need I say more?

Sorry about the off topic rant, it was very unprofessional but I just
couldn't resist. Phoenix really isn't so bad.... (really)

You should try Florida...when I moved back from Dallas I could fly by
swimming through the humidity.

I spent about seven years in Phoenix, up until Dec 97. If you hook up with
a larger company, Allied Signal, Motorola, Honeywell, etc. you can make good
money. Phoenix metro area is over a million people with all the problems
that come with being the sixth largest metro area in the nation. Lots of
random crime, gangs, drugs, the air is brown (I'm not kidding). Think urban
sprawl and houses that all look exactly the same and that is pretty much it.
My wife and I both taught in public schools, Mesa and Phoenix. If you have
children stay far far away.....we moved when my daughter was four. Got
tired of the police helicopters buzzing our neighborhood at two in the
morning looking for the bad guys. Positive is that job market is booming,
if you like big city living and 110 degree days for three months at time go
for it. If you got about 400K to drop you can live in Paradise Valley or
Carefree and it isn't too bad there.

I love Phoenix. This is where I make my home and I'm not looking to leave
any time soon. As far as the employment outlook, there's several companies
that are constantly hiring for help desk type positions. They typically
start around $11/hour. Look at MindSpring in Tempe and MCI-WorldCom in
Chandler.

Contrary to what Johnny Velvet says, you don't have to have $400K to live
somewhere safe. I personally live in Scottsdale, but there are other nice
areas. It is pretty warm here, but not 110 for three months. Also, the
humidity is pretty low (except in August) so it's not that bad.

Best regards,

Matt Bridges
