This is a follow-up to the "Anyone heard of this company?" thread from
last week...

I finally landed up taking a road trip to northeast Tennessee over the
weekend, and got to Mountain City. Here's what I found out?

- A-side is indeed Commnet Wireless -- analog only. (B-side is ALLTEL,
analog-only; SPCS[!] also has coverage! No GSM or IS-136, though...)
- SID is 1949
- Switch appears to be Lucent (definitely not Motorola, and probably not
Nortel)
- AT&T (CallPlus) and SPCS phones roamed on them; I don't know about
Verizon as I could never get my T300 to not see ALLTEL. :(
- There's no caller ID on incoming calls. Call delivery worked fine
without having to do *18, etc.
- Outgoing caller ID shows up as -- get this -- 928-317-7700 (Yuma,
*ARIZONA*) -- which is also Commnet's roamer access number. I was able
to reach my SPCS phone roaming analog in TENNESSEE dialing a number in
ARIZONA! Apparently the Mountain City cell sites (FCC says there are
at least three) are backhauled nearly 2000 miles from Mountain City to
Yuma! I assume their other markets in AZ, CA, CO, etc. go to Yuma as
well. Backhauling sites 200-300 miles isn't uncommon, but 2000????
- Attempts to use an old unregistered Cingular phone forced to the A side
didn't go to a credit card service, but to a Global Crossing long
distance recording. Apparently something's broken there...

I still wonder why this area isn't mentioned on their web site...

Now we all know,

Thanks for the research--this will be a BIG footnote on your Southeast page!
How do you recognise a Lucent vs. Motorola vs Nortel switch on air? _CTG_
5th edition shows Johnson County UNcovered by Verizon SID 00093 Johnson
City, Sullivan County, Tennessee (next door, see p.475). I'm filling the
margins in my copy.
