While checking my Verizon account online I noticed a 108 minute call.
When I checked the call on my phone it agreed on the 108 mins. I
seldom make calls of more than a few minutes and on average use around
30 mins/mo. So even though I was sure I didn't talk anywhere near that
long, it appears the phone was in use for that period of time.
Further, I checked with the family member to whom the call was made
and his phone had a record of the call (not a missed call) but showed
the call at zero minutes. Weird.

I called Verizon and the operator said that if the phone was not hung
up (by pushing the end button) it could cause that to happen. I was
skeptical but since she gave me a credit I didn't argue.

I've never had that happen before. Any Comments?

BTW I'm on a grandfathered plan (100 mins/$15 mo) with the overage
charged at 35 cents/min so it was more than a few buck mistake in my
case if it had not been forgiven...

Hmm, on Verizon's MVNO, 154 minutes/month would be $6.67/month ($80 per
year), taxes and fees included. I suspect that the $15/month you're
paying is more like $18/month, about 170% more per month for about 35%
fewer minutes. Each minute is 4¢, if you need more you refill your one
year $80 card early.

It's happened to me several times actually. Fortunately I'm not paying
15-35¢/minute when it does happen! The grandfathered plans on Verizon
are often no bargain.

Sounds kind of hard to believe, I would think the call would just end
itself sooner or later whether or not you push the end call button.
But at least you got the credit.

So is the problem really just forgetting to push the end button? I
can't believe that after 15 years with Verizon this is the first time
I've ever done that. And why did it decide to arbitrarily hang itself
up after 106 mins? Why isn't Verizon technology smart enough to know
that the connection is gone? Heck my old technology POTS landline used
to scream bloody murder if I forgot to hang it up. But I have cable
landline now so not sure what it does, could be as dumb as Verizon I
suppose...

>Fortunately I'm not paying 15-35¢/minute when it does happen!

Overage could be priced at $10 a minute for all I care cause if I
never go over there's never a charge. This hiccup was an exception.
(And Verizon ate the charge.)

>The grandfathered plans on Verizon are often no bargain.

YMMV. As I've said 15 years with the company and this is my first
problem. Before this the only contact I've had with Verizon is when I
go in every two years and get my 'free' phone. No hassle reloading
and/or recharging cards, keeping dates straight, checking websites, or
any of the other stuff I read here. Sure, maybe I could save $10 or so
per month by going through those hassles, but heck I could just give
up one soda a day and save $60/mo and that would be lots easier... ;)
Oh and even if I got 1000 mins/mo instead of 100/mo still no real
difference if I continue to average 30 min/mo. I repeat...YMMV.

I don't know. Sometimes I get "your calling party has disconnected" when
they end the call, so it ends my call too (even when they are the
"called" party so it is not dependent on who initiated the call). But
sometimes I'll see the option to "Return to the Call in Progress," even
though I thought the call was over, and wonder how many minutes I used
on that call.

Not sure if it's a Verizon thing or a handset thing. When I had flip
phones it ended the call when you closed the phone, but with my Android
phone you need to really end the call.

When recently checking my calls on the Verizon site (because of this
problem), I noticed a string of 1 or 2 minute consecutive calls, all
to the same number. But Verizon explains this in their FAQ saying this
can be caused by the signal from a single call being transferred from
cell to cell when moving.

That's what the Verizon rep said. Push the end button. Maybe that was
it, but I'm skeptical. Heck I would understand up to 5 minutes with no
connection until Verizon was sure the connection was gone and then
terminate, but 106 minutes??? But Google didn't find any similar
problems and no one here seems to know, so I guess I'll just be
careful and hope it doesn't happen again. Thanks for you comments.

That's what I thought. But she gave me the credit almost immediately
without any argument from me so I was suspicious that perhaps Verizon
had a technical problem that affected more people than just me. But
once the credit was given there wasn't much more for me to argue
about... ;) However I would still feel better if I really knew what
caused it so that it could be avoided in the future. Course I'll try
to remember to push the end button but I've no doubt I'll eventually
screw up on that again...
