In Canyonlands, there are three entrances. From the North the service is
digital and excellent. The east is hard to get to, but if you go, there is
little service unless you get up on high ground. From the south, you lose
coverage as you drop into the valley at Newspaper Rock, however, I still got
V/M notification in analog while watching the rock climbers down there. I
could not access V/M there, but after a few miles my phone switched to
Cellular One analog and I was able to call V/M and a couple calls. Right in
the park near the Needles it was hit or miss but usually digital.
As an aside, stopping at the Needles Outpost at the south entrance was the
high point of the trip. It's run by a couple who treat you like they
haven't seen humans for a month, but the place was busy. They have an air
strip and cater to flyers who stop in. They use cellular for all calls,
their online access, and their credit card authorizations, I felt guilty
making them use their minutes!. They have a web site at:

If you travel south to Monument Valley, VZ service is good and digital
except at Mexican Hat.
If you want to choose, Arches NP is much better than Canyonlands, unless you
take the White Rim road which is a wonderful 4WD route.
As another aside, I did not get all my calls while there. I blame the fact
that they changed out the Denver switch that week, and the calls couldn't
make it to the Utah switch in time.

Thanks for the great detailed information. Specifically, I'm staying at
Dead Horse Point Campground and Big Bend Campground. Do you know if
there's Verizon service in each and if it's digital? I know this is very
specific so you may not know but I thought I'd ask. Thanks.

Big Bend is, in fact, in the canyon upriver (NE) from Moab (where the
river does a a big "S" turn). I would bet against getting reliable
service there. Dead Horse Point is high above almost everthing around
it - definitely good service.
