As a newbie on Verizon, I have a couple of questions:
* On Sprint, I could call the area code, exchange and "MAIL" ...(206)
853-MAIL for example, and get connected to the SPCS network to check
voicemail without calling my phone. Is there such a backdoor for Verizon?
* What does EXTENDED NETWORK mean? Sometimes my V60c indicated EXTENDED
NETWORK, and I want to know what it means. Do I incur any costs? How do I
get my phone to switch back the Verizon? What are the pluses and minuses?
Any other tips that anyone can provide would be great ;)

No. Either dial *VM<send>, or your own telephone number. (The latter
works from landline phones too.)

It means roaming on Sprint PCS or Alltel, with certain price plans (e.g.,
America's Choice). There are no extra costs, but not all on-network
features will necessarily work (e.g., Mobile-to-Mobile).

No, you can only call your own cell number. There is one feature
that Verizon has (in most markets) Sprint doesn't have (in all markets).
If you call your number, access your v-mail, and press 2 to leave a
message for another Verizon subscriber, without ringing their phone.
Sprint allows a "11" before the number, but doesn't work across
markets.

It means you are not on the Verizon system, you are on a preferred
roaming partner, but will not be charged anything extra. Some features
may not work.

You don't. It is all automatic. There is no Verizon service
available when on "Extended Network, until you move closer to a Verizon
site.

You appear to be on the America's Choice plan. Always check your
roaming banner to make sure you are not roaming before making the call.
You can make the call while roaming, but will be charged extra. Verizon
does not have a feature like the "Sprint PCS Only" function.
Read your welcome book for other hints. Little things you can
discover there like using your voicemail as an alarm clock if your phone
is not equipped with one.
Also, it would be of great help to review posts in this newsgroup as far
back as you can, to find other unique Verizon fetaures.

Go to www.google.com and access the alt.cellular.verizon group there. They
have archives for groups that go back quite a few years. I have one that I
read that goes back to 1996. Some if not all go back further

Bill, I am on America's Choice. Actually my wife and I share minutes, have
phone to phone etc.
Is the wireless web option worth it? I can't tell yet.
Also, I was BLOWN AWAY by the customer service. After my post, I called
Verizon's CS, and was greeted by a nice middle aged women, who walked me
through what EXTENDED NETWORK was. She the told me she would mail me
information....and then she told me her name, what office she worked in AND
her extension ! I almost fell on the floor. :) The customer (dis)service at
SPCS is hosted by young urban females who can barely speak English (I once
heard "can I *aks* you a question" from a rep) and are in no mood to help
you. It's almost like SPCS gets inmates from female prisons around the
country and has them man the phones.
Verizon was a totally different experience....so far I am thrilled.
Back to the Extended Network...if I am understanding what I am being told,
my America's Choice minutes works when I am in this mode, and I don't pay
extra for SPCS network usage? WOW...Verizon should market this as "you get
all of Sprint's network PLUS ours"

It's not that, it's part of Sprint plus part of Alltel, and they'd probably
get in trouble if they named names.

from your mobile to check voice mail and the extended network you see
showing up on your phone is happening when you are in an area that is not
Verizon's network but who they have an agreement w/ for coverage. Depends
on rate plan, but you should not be billed any extra when in those areas.

There are such numbers but they vary from market to market. I've never been
able to get a complete list of them. There's a guy who has assembled a

Some people do get less service than you did. Remember, half of all
Verizon's reps are in the lower 50% of the class, when it comes to
ability, knowledge, attitude, etc.

AFAIK, you don't get the entire SPCS (and Alltel) network, you only
get SPCS and Alltel in areas where Verizon has agreements with them.
I could be wrong.
