There's too much darn Wi-Fi everywhere. It's just too hard to get away
from it.

""Now saying, 'I was underground' is not a good excuse," said Isabelle
Simone, 23 years old, an assistant costume designer who admits she once
ate lunch in a subway station to avoid being reached."

While the Wi-Fi is presently offered for free by Boingo (sponsored by
HTC) there's no guarantee that it will remain free forever, though if
HTC stopped sponsoring it it's likely that some other company would pick
it up.

And it'll be a while before the whole system has it:

: The next wave of 40 stations to come online by the first quarter of 2014
: will be heavily used stops in Midtown East and Queens, according to
: the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, while the service is expected
: to be rolled out to the remaining stations by 2017.

Really? Want to get away from WiFi and and all that? Turn off your phone, or
silence it.... (duh)

Bad answer. Many employers require employees to have their phones on at
all times. When my wife's employer used Nextel it was way too easy for
employees to claim "no coverage" as a reason that they could not be
reached out in the field.

I have always wondered why public transit (at least rail transit...)
does not offer WiFi as an inducement for people to ride.

Seems like it would not be that expensive...

It is being added. The ACE train (Altamont Commuter Express) in my area
has it. VTA in Silicon Valley has it on some of the trains and buses.

CalTrain, the rail line between San Jose and San Francisco doesn't have
it and it's probably the fault of Facebook, eBay, Yahoo, Google and
Apple. These companies have large fleets of buses that provide free
transportation for employees which has caused a big loss of passengers
for Caltrain. Of course the private bus fleets have Wi-Fi. I've been on
the Apple buses (the company that provides the Apple buses uses them for
other charters on weekends) and they're very nice.

<http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2012/12/silicon-valleys-exclusive-shuttles.html>

<http://urbanist.typepad.com/.a/6a00d83454714d69e2017ee3c18662970d-popup>

These private bus fleets have also had a big effect on real estate in
San Francisco, both rentals and purchases because housing near the bus
stops is more valuable. Younger employees like living in San Francisco
rather than in Silicon Valley which is incredibly boring at night and on
the weekends. Hopefully these companies will add more of the
neighborhoods that are undergoing gentrification, like Excelsior.
Ironically, the commute direction used to be mainly from bedroom
communities south of San Francisco north into the city, but now what
used to be the reverse commute is the real commute direction. Even
though the buses can get stuck in traffic they are still far faster than
the train,

You have to toy to woik. U pay toy 2 work, and VZW is mucho
better any way ya look at it, to make toy work when toy MUST work.

Whining and crying no matter how much $$ later does not solve
it failing *THEN* and now need to deal with lame loser BS,
who gives a whatever why. Our company, and many..many..we
deal will NOT deal with 2nd or 3rd parties that mainly use
'free' and 'pure' and 'safe' Wi-Fi in ya subway train tunnel...

And who do ya blame, for damages when some loser sues
ya, with pure lame threats: ie: McKormick picture whores?

They chase us for over a decade. U see the posts.

.."Gutless coward people with no honor...spit...." <JJTj>

But we found out..how 2 playyy da gaime..

J's out of town, folks, I'll just say this:

..don't trust Wi-fi no wai..

The chain of comand is so weak, and so non-reality
in your subway tunnel, then the best thing you BETTER
have to deal with is, not getting on fartboirk, se'n ya
fav vid sent to you & $$ paid on yor contracted VZW bill.

How slow does fuck book send you your vid of today's
999xk watched cat litter box vid..to burn ya time card?

Because to do "..the job.." then and there is worth x times
whatever said personal 2 yr contract is. As long as it happens.

And we don't care. We pay for the service. And it must work..

..and it's all biz expense, tax spew, the REAL ph#s that , make
the wheels go round, who pay the service that spins da rubber..

..nothing sucks donkey more then a 4th party flat tire...

We never have this problem with VZW, that others with *burp*
go thru over data % text % voice % roam % get lawyer involved
stupid 20 line 4 yr, upgraed bad UHF channel 38 on a ..bad..nite.

Just what the hell are you trying to say? Are you trying to be cute
or what?

The bottom line is, use real words in real English because not everyone
even knows what stupid accent you are trying to type and really

You sound like a complete idiot

My initial reaction was that it was a pharmacological issue.

But now that you've said it.... it does seem like an attempt at some
sort of accent. Quite a bit of effort there too.... but even though
I'm *tying* to get it, I'm still drawing a blank.

As somebody said, the bandwidth of ASCII text is extremely limited.

A salaried employee is often not ever off the clock. Companies have
gotten smart about maximizing the amount of work time per employee.

Employees like the free meals at work, high speed internet
reimbursement, and company paid smart phones but of course the real
beneficiary is the employer that is able to greatly increase the amount
of work per employee at a relatively low cost plus the costs are
deductible as business expenses. It goes further than that with free
transportation since the company buses have an atmosphere that
encourages working during the commute rather than listening to music or
some other unproductive activity.

Depends what "off the clock" means. In many instances it just means not in
the office.

listening to music and working at not mutually exclusive

Right. And listening to *good* music is never unproductive! :-) (I know:
"define 'good.'")

And here, I'm not going to get into the salaried "exempt/non-exempt [from
overtime]" FLSA regulations...

Good is in the ear of the beholder... Does it matter if our tastes differ
if we enjoy it? If everyone like the same stuff life would be boring.

Our biz goes at so many levels, the right people
don't mind, in fact INSIST their phones WORK 24/7

..and we PAY for it to happen, do not depend on some
3rd, 4th party, whatever Wi-Fi to be there when needed.

It's called the big time..not playing games...

My experience has been that fewer and fewer people are non-exempt and
more-and-more people are exempt. Dunno who's been getting paid off or
how, but in the field I work in the concept of "Exempt" as a "bona fide
executive, administrative, professional or outside sales employee" has
been totally perverted. People who have no more of a decision-making or
managerial role than somebody who carries hod or lays bricks are
all-of-a-sudden "Exempt". Now everybody's a "Professional"....

Indeed, anyone that does any sort of computer administration work is a
professional and exempt. No managing needed, no decision making needed.

Not "everybody" but good jobs require new skills; e.g. using a computer!

If you can be replaced by a machine, you will be.
