There are still places in the wilds of Minnesota (and some not so wild
places) where I fall into analog mode with my Kyocera 2235.

I ->really hate the phone and have finally decided to replace it, and it
looks like the VX3300 is the only trimode phone left.

Is it? Have I missed some others?

The Motorola V325 is the other AMPS/CDMA phone, and one of their newest
(as of this message).

As my contract nears expiration in November, I'm keeping an eye on both
the v325 and E815. I hear great things from howardforums.com and here,
among other sites, of both phones, but I'd still like analog.
Phonescoop, in comparing the two (v325 and E815) shows nearly identical
results, but the v325 is a tad smaller and a bit lighter.

I'm also a big Motorola fan :-)

When the time comes (about six months), I'll see what's available and do
an in-store comparison.

Thanks! A few more bells and whistles than I need, but still a
relatively cheap upgrade.

Welcome to my hell. For the time being, I am sticking with Sprint PCS and my
Sanyo 7400. I don't dare change over to Verizon and lose analog, for the same
reasons you state. Heading into the arrowhead, or up around Leech Lake are
bound to drop you into analog if you leave the highway (Lutsen is well
coverred by Verizon, but that is an anomoly).

So far, I have found nothing better in MN than using an America plan on Sprint
PCS, unfortunately. I really would like to use Verizon. BTW ... Sprint PCS
is also narrowing their tri-mode selection, but it is not as small as
Verizon's selection .... yet.

I'm not really concerned about Verizon's own coverage; my plan is a
->really old "local" plan (two phones sharing 100 min, $30/month), so
I'm roaming just about all the time as it is. My wife and I use our
phones very infrequently, but when we use them, we really need to use
them, so a phone with the greatest chance of hooking up with somebody
is important.

If the Nokia 6256i is still available (at Circuit City kiosks and
Best Buy), it is trimode. Nice phone, but d**n hard to find.

LG VX4650 It was the nicest tri-mode phone I could find without a camera -
much nicer than the VX3300 I think. I'm quite happy with it. It replaced
a Kyocera 2325.

Dang. Just a couple of days too late :-)

When I told the CSR I needed a tri-mode phone, that one wasn't mentioned,
and when I looked at the pictures on the Web site, I just assumed that
big thing at the hinge was a camera lens [don't want a camera]; does it
do anything, or is it just cosmetic?

The "big thing" at the hinge on a 4650 is the speaker; it does not have a
camera.

Sorry about that. Well you're still within your 15 day exchange period ...
What did you get?

It's a relatively large speakerphone speaker. Kinda odd looking but the
speakerphone works great. I had 20 people in a meeting room the other day
carrying on a conversation with the party at the other end - plenty of
volume and clarity.

My workplace does not permit camera phones (or cameras of any kind) for
security reasons and tri-mode was a must since I regularly find myself in
remote areas. The VX4650 was the perfect choice for me. The VX4700 is
similar but with push to talk.

I'm in the same boat with cameras, and my wife's work takes her into
the wilds of Minnesota, so the same requirement for analog capability
applies.

I ended up with a pair of VX3300s, which seem to be perfectly
adequate for our needs, although the VX4650 does look a bit spiffier.

Not enough reason for me to go through the song and dance of
replacing the phones, I think.
