PRL 50113 has been released and here are the changes compared to PRL
50110. Some of the details of the SIDs were obtained from
www.justalurker.com and www.mountainwireless.com I'll start with the
"bad" news and work towards the "good" news. Some changes in priority
and changes from A to D/A may not be noted along with any other changes
that I may have missed.

This one first of all seems to fix a lot of areas that we thought were
errors in the prior PRL. Areas like Alaska, Minnesota, Oregon, and
Washington are back to FR. Also, a few things that kept flipping back
and forth in MI are now changed again. The good news in Michigan is
that Thumb Cellular is now part of AC based on the PRL and also based on
rumors from Verizon, so I expect it to stay. The UP and NE corner of
the LP are still not part of AC, but from rumors I've heard we may be
able to expect that included in the first part of next year. Four
Sprint areas have been dropped. Also, for the first time that I've seen
in a Verizon PRL is that we have negative entries. Four new Verizon PCS
SIDs have been added, they must plan on expanding their PCS coverage in
certain areas. Also, lots of analog only areas before have been marked
as D/A so that if a digital signal is available the phone will now use
it, some of these areas are RM and some are FR. Overall I think this is
an improvement expect for the 4 Sprint areas that got dropped, but
hopefully coverage on Verizon in those areas is good enough that it
won't be noticed.

VZW = Verizon native area - no triangle
FR = Free roam/extended network - flashing triangle
RM = Roaming - solid triangle
NEG = Negative Entry - will not roam on this provider
A = Analog Only
D/A = Digital/Analog
D = Digital Only
PCS = PCS

Now Dobson, and probably removed for that reason; ACS is in the PRL as
well so this is really no big deal.

These (or at least 1707) have gone from FR to RM to NEG...I suspect
VZW has had recurring roaming issues with this area and blocked them
to help resolve problems. Still, VZW and Dobson hate each other ever
since the latter sold GA-1/TN-4/CA-8/etc. to the former so there could
be more to this...

I looked at the raw PRL someone else posted and on whatever system
this is, which is likely outside the US, 800 is blocked but 1900 is
permitted.

There's proof Kentucky is getting more CDMA! :)

This also means that VZW customers from A-side 800 markets will no
longer roam on Cingular and Dobson in SE KY.

Of course, it's still roaming on AC plans, but I expect that to change
once Ramcell actually gets its CDMA up early next year; there is no
longer any good reason for the small Kentucky carriers (Appalachian is
also going CDMA, and while Bluegrass hasn't stated what they're doing
yet, I can't see them going GSM for a number of reasons) to "screw"
VZW.

RCC is now FR in WA/OR (at least some parts), KS, MN, and NH/VT/ME/MA,
but *NOT* in AL/MS where VZW has issues with 10-mile coverage holes on
interstates. Now I'm getting more and more concerned that RCC is
going to go GSM in AL/MS and really make a mess for VZW customers :(

> 9562 Excomm, LLC (A)

Excomm = Commnet Wireless (Yuma and all that)... :) I would've never
expected ANY Commnet system to be FR, EVER!

SID 9562 = Bergen/Velva (McHenry Co, part of ND RSA 2) ND
http://www.commnetwireless.com/Velva.jpg

Of course, if this were SID 3000 (western Elbert Co CO) or 3034 (Lake
Isabella/Boron CA) it might be more useful... ;)

8863 (Commnet Florida Keys) is still roaming, but seems to have moved
to the TX/OK/MO geo of the PRL for some reason. (I suspect someone
just got the Keys SID confused with Commnet's Hannibal MO area SID,
which is 8861.)

This still means it *will* roam on SPCS in these areas if there is no other

I was thrown for a second with the RCC Minnesota thing, then realized that
they are based, at least somewhat, in Alexandria, MN. This *does* show that
RCC is making progress on a CDMA overlay in some market, somewhere, which
gives us hope elsewhere...

^^^^ See this?!!? This means the dreaded CMS of St. Cloud implemented (or
re-implemented, depending on who you believe about the former existance of
CDMA overlay on their system at 800 MHz) a CDMA overlay for the Stearns /
Benton / Sherburne county 'Black Hole' in MN. This kind of jives with what
that guy from VZW (Great Plains director of Roaming) told me a few months
ago about 'more CDMA options in MN coming soon...' Now CMS operates AMPS,
TDMA and CDMA. It's still roaming, but I would expect that might change
eventually....

Plus, more D/A roaming is always a plus...

From my understanding on how PRLs work is that yes you would still roam
on them if no other signal was available. I've heard though in places
like this, if you try to make a call on the Sprint SID you get America's
Roaming Network.

That's what is appears like to me, although I don't focus too much on
that area - since I live in Michigan. And I did find this interesting
since there were reports from people in this area who did get billed
roaming, so this (if accurate) is more than a fix to an incorrect PRL,
it's more of a "Ooops, we pissed off our custoemrs, better add that
coverage back".

Thanks to both you and Stanley for your insight/input on this.

I live in Houston and my phone (a530) goes on Extended Network "4622
SprintPCS" enough that VZW should have no changed it to roming. I have PRL
50110. So, if I do not dial *228 and update, 4622 will still be FR?

Thanks

You phone will still indicate it as FR. The billings are not based on
the PRL though, they are based on the billing system. You'll probably
be fine for at least a month, but don't be surprised if either a) you
get billed for roaming. If you do, you probably can call once and get
them credited, but they'll also inform you to update your PRL. or b) you
try to place a call and you get the American Roaming Network.

No -- if a PCS (1900 MHz) system's SID isn't in a PRL, a phone using
that PRL will never register on it, except for perhaps 911 calls. The
only way to get a phone onto a PCS system not in its PRL is to force
the phone onto that system via creative use of *228xx, debug menus,
etc.

Is that just for PCS? Will Cellular (800) register even if it's not in
the PRL? I think I've had that happen a couple times - for a brief moment.

If the channel of the non-listed SID is in the PRL, then you will be able to
lock on, if you manage to get your phone in a position where it can't receive
anything else. I've been able to connect to SPCS 4106 just to see if I could do
it :)

I used to get away with putting SPCS into NAM2, but now SPCS checks for NAM1 (
as does Verizon), so the phone will no longer authenticate.

ST7868. Won't work on SPCS in NAM3 (can't authenicate), but will work if I
manage to lock on in NAM1.

Doesn't really matter, just interesting.

This has to do with the AKEY. Basically the phone is using a stronger
authentication mechanism (no longer just the ESN and phone number).

If you switch to a phone which didn't come from Verizon, you'll end up
using the weaker authentication method and the NAM2 trick to force
Sprint will work.
