When you place a call from the cellular to a landline phone, does it show
the name on the landline phone's caller ID?

That's what I'm guessing the original poster was referring to.

FWIW, Verizon said that caller ID name delivery to landlines would start
for Atlanta customers 8/1, but it hasn't started working yet. :( I'm
used to having this work with both Powertel/VS and Sprint PCS.

I don't really know what it's doing in Charlotte. Originally, we were
supposed to get name delivery in 8/00, then we received another notice about
name delivery in 8/01. However, Alltel LEC uses an alternate CID name
database, so we still receive "CELL PHONE NC" for all calls from Verizon
Wireless.

FWIW, we receive "ALLTEL WIRELESS" for their calls, as well as "PCS PHONE
NC" for other carriers.

When I did mine, it showed the number, but the name displayed as out of
area.

That's what we get here - OUT OF AREA and the number when calling to a
landline, and no name at all, just the number when calling to a cellular.

FWIW, the LG V111 will show the name if you have it programmed into memory,
which is nice... not aware if any others do this (but considering this is a
low-end phone, I'd hope so).

It is an interesting problem. Caller ID is now sending account name in our
area. My friend has a business with 7 phones for him and employees. Each
phone shows as "Fred Smith" on caller ID! Verizon says they won't change it
for each phone.

Here in Ukiah, CA(area code 707) different carriers show different
things on PacBell's landline caller id. Calls from US Cellular show:
*US Cellular* for a name and then the phone number, and calls from
Verizon(formerly GTE, formerly Contel) show Uknown Name for the name
and then the number. A new PCS company, EDGE Wireless, who is part of
AT&T, is starting service here next month, it will be interesting to
see what shows up on the caller id from them.

That's odd -- I'd expect you'd see at least city/state...(provided
your landline carrier is BellSouth and not an independent.)

Every recent phone I've ever seen from any carrier, CDMA or otherwise,
does this. (My StarTAC 7868, which has four entries for numbers per
name, even shows the icon for the "type" of number [home, work, etc.]
on incoming calls.)

AFAIK there is no way to deliver name TO a cell phone, with CDMA or
any other protocol. Thus the phones "fudge" by looking up in memory.

Here in NJ, if you have Verizon it displays "New Jersey" along with
the # if you have a NJ number. Whichever state you have, it displays
that state. However, for all customers with Sprint, the name is
transmitted as well as the number.

In another development, when I called people in Verizon landline territory
in New York from my VZW phone in Charlotte, they'd get the number with
"NORTH CAROLINA". For some reason, that's now changed to "NORTHCAROLINA704"
on their display. I guess there's some software in the midst of being
upgraded.

A bit of a history lesson, also. When I opened my Charlotte account with
BANM in 1995, calls to a landline phone from my cell would show up with
"METRO MOBILE" in the name. I don't know how long after the BANM/Metro
Mobile buyout this was.

I have a StarTac 7868W and on page 28 it states that it will show the
callers name if it has been programmed into the phone book, other wise it
will only show the number.

I can set it to always see the number if I wish by setting <phone
book><number prefer><on>.

Well, I guess Verizon's caller ID is not consistent. Yesterday, my land
line showed "Alexandria" (the city where the phone number is listed, not
where I live) instead of my name. Before this month, caller ID would show
as "Unavailable" or "Virginia."

Nothing like consistency!

Stop complaining - Verizon is consistently inconsistent. :)
