I'm going to be making a trip to Joshua Tree. I assume that I won't
get coverage (well, maybe roaming) in the actual park, but how about
in the surrouding area? Like, palm springs, etc?

Thanks,

Coverage should be fine along the surrounding highways but probably not
in the park itself. Palm Springs and surrounding areas seem to be very
well covered now.

rbb,
Sprint PCS ends abruptly at the Santa Barbara city line. I got a stray
Sprint signal near the center of town on 101, and another on west end of
the UC-SB campus, but they weren't really usuable. They weren't even
usable just outside of (although I wasn't inside) the SB airport.
Sprint often covers airports first, but is SB's major? So it works well
through Ventura, then pffffft.

Bill,

Sprint doesn't cover Santa Barbara yet and they don't claim to on their
maps. They did however get about three towers approved in Santa Barbara
county this month so construction should begin in a couple of months. An
additional 10 or 12 sites are pending. They also have two new sites
approved in Carpenteria which is right at the Santa Barbara county line
just north of Ventura. In about 4 or 5 months they should have a useable
signal in some parts of Santa Barbara county.

I just made a trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco last week, going
along Interstate 5. I had service all the way through, for about 400
miles. There was a few miles that had no service near Livermore in
the hills (where those electric generator windmills are).

I recently drove between L.A. and Santa Cruz. I noticed that there is now a
good signal starting about 20 miles north of Atascadero and north of there
until Salinas. Then there's a good signal in the Gilroy area too. But
Atascadero to Santa Barbara is all dead. Analog roaming doesn't even work
unless you give the operator your credit card number. Then they want to
charge you $1.50/min. on top of the regular roaming rate.

I can tell you that there is something wrong with your PRL if you are
unable to make roaming calls without a credit card. Sprint has an
automatic roaming agreement that covers all of California and I have had
no trouble making and receiving calls while in Santa Barbara using
Verizon's network with PRL 10014. No credit card needed.

I used to love that ride and it's one of the few things I miss about
Cali. There were stretches along there before it hit I-80 where I'd
be doing 100mph and housewives in minivans would fly by me!
