For those customers in the 716 area code who are migrating to 585:

Anybody have any luck getting a service a rep to walk you through
reprogramming your phone? A huge article in the local paper today
stated the procedures for each carrier on how to get your phone
reprogrammed. Sprint customers were told to call and have a rep walk
you through the re-program.

That I did tonite and the gentlemen told me I would have to cancel my
current plan and sign up with a new plan because mine wasn't available
anymore. I almost went balistic. I explained to him I was not changing
service areas. Certain areas of upstate NY are going through a
mandatory migration to the 585 area code. He came back and presented me
with the same answer.

Both area codes allegedly will work until November 2004.

Any ideas?

Mark,
This has not been reported as a problem, since it happens almost every
month in the USA. You had the misfortune of getting a new agent, or one
who just didn't get what you were asking for. Call back, during daytime
hours, when your chances of getting an experienced agent are better.

How did you get past "Claire" I got hung up in an endless loop trying to find
out how to do it.

Mark,
I called sprint the weekend before the area code changed, and the customer
service rep said I had to do nothing (I'm guessing they figure my phone will
stop working before 2004 grace period runs out when the cell phone companies
have to change. I don't know what everyone is squawking about with
"claire", I had no problems. I told claire that I wanted to change my phone
because my area code changed, and she connected me with a real person right
away. But yes, I too saw the D&C article and had a good laugh at it.
Although I have not called Sprint since the article in yesterdays paper came
out, I'm guessing they will not want me to do anything until the last
minute. My wife's phone is a Nextel phone and they are supposed to get
instructions in the mail on how to make the update to the phone just before
the grace period runs out, like sometime in 2004 according to the article,
and I'm guessing she will not have the phone by then. My caller ID both at
work and on my cell phone still show the 716 area code, so I'm guessing
Frontier is still not completely converted over yet.

Tried "Claire" again and this time I must have said the right thing. I got
thru to a rep right away. In less than 10 minutes I had both my phone and my
girldfriend's phone reprogrammed. Actually very easy to do.
