I just picked up a phone yesterday, but I think my salesperson forgot
to include some basic informational literature (I had a SprintPCS phone
before for a short period of time, so he assumed I was familiar with
everything).

What is the # for customer service?

I keep hearing stories about people's Nokia 6185's locking up when
trying to download updated roaming lists or something like that while
calling customer service. Should I be calling periodically to update
my phone's info or does this happen automatically?

Are there any other free #'s included? Any pay features that I should
know about?

Thanks.

1) CustomerCare phone number is *2, and it's free (it doesn't draw from your
plan's airtime).
2) To lock up certain 6185s, press *2 [Talk] :)
3) Roaming list is only updated OTA (over the air) when you're specifically
asking for it. Read a very informative post done yesterday by WndrGrl on how
it works in details.
4) You should expect to be charged for any airtime you use to retrieve your
voicemail from your headset (it's free if you're using a landline phone for
that). To activate and set up your voicemail box, call your own number from
your handset and follow the prompts.
5) There's no other free service numbers (which I can think of from top of
my head, anyway. Others please correct me if I'm wrong).

You mean you did not receive an instruction book with your new
6185? You deserve one! Ask customer service and they should mail one
to you.

*2 gives you Sprint customer service only
*611 gives you customer service with Sprint OR while roaming.
*CSP or *DUI connects in our state to the Highway Patrol. There should
be a similar free number in your state. Ask the police on a non-
emergency number.

*411 gives you Directory Assistance @ .75 per call and they will
connect you to keep your eyes on the road.

In Boston, you can call *1 to get SmartTraveler, which is a free traffic
reporting system. This may work some other places as well, but I know for
sure in Boston (because I use it almost everyday).

Please remember that these star-codes are switch-level codes. *CSP
and *DUI are not supported everywhere. If you use an invalid code
you'll get an error that talks about feature codes.

Also note that the other important code is 911 or *911. These should
work even if your phone is stolen, locked, or disconnected for
nonpayment or spending limit. If you ever have trouble reaching 911
for any reason other than there is no signal where you're standing
(even while roaming), when the emergency has passed, call SPCS
Customer Care and insist that a trouble ticket be logged. You'll
need: Your model phone, the location you were at including cross
streets, and as detailed a description as you can come up with about
what happened when you tried to call. Inability to call 911 is a
Severity 1 issue that has an even shorter fix time than customer can't
make or receive calls.
