The Nokia 9000i was launched in Canada two weeks ago by Microcell who
operate the 1.9GHz GSM service called FIDO up here. The units are priced
at $1500 CDN. ($1 US = $1.45 - approx - do your own math)

They're really neat. I got a hands-on demo from a FIDO PR team this
morning, and it's certainly impressive.

On the other hand, it's quite big. Think of the old milk-carton motorola
phones, only a little thinner and with Nokia's patented "rounded edges".

The other thing is that while the organizer can run basic text/email/web
apps, the OS is some rinky-dink thing called GEOS, and isn't really
upgradable as far as I can tell. You'd be better off buying a basic GSM
or equivalent digital phone and a Windows CE machine. The combined size
and weight would be about the same, you'd save some money, and your data
might actually be compatible with something.

In short, a good idea, but one that's probably a little too late.

Mo.

Upgradeable to what? I hear Win CE 1.0 devices are flying off the
shelves, as the OEMs are having fire-sales to get rid of the stock. Now,
several of those devices *could* be upgradable... just a though for ya.

You would save money? Not. Nokia 2160: ~$150 (with a service package).
WinCE device: ~$499 (for a low-end CE 2.0). You'll need a modem.
Perhaps a data-card too. Them numbers are starting to add up...

AND, show me a Win CE device that is smaller than the N9000. Just one...

finally, compatable? have you tried to open a REAL word doc in
pocketWord? he hehe he he h eh

thanks!
Erich

I'm still waiting for some competition to the 9000... been waiting for
almosy 18 months...

At COMDEX, Samsung showed a phone/pda that looked just like the Nokia
except it was CDMA, and had a WinCE device inside! Pen driven, no keyboard.

Yeah. From what I've heard, they have been workin on that thing for a
while. Still, it hasnt shipped yet and it isnt "smaller." Though, a step
in the right direction.
