I was almost at the point of getting one of these, but I now keep
seeing reports of people complaining they can't even get 12 hours of
battery life from it. That's with just making a couple of short calls
and a few texts.

Can anyone here who's actually got one confirm whether it really is as
bad as that?

GSMArena.com always has excellent and detailed reviews of phones-

What's more- how are these people using their phone? If you leave
GPS/wifi/bluetooth always running, your battery will definitely drain
quickly.
FWIW- The Mini has a 1200 mAh battery as against a 1500 mAh battery in
the regular N97.

I have an N79 - similar size and functionality and 1200mAh battery.

It runs for days, but as with all phones the battery runs down quicker if

You are a long way from the base station
You set the screen to stay on a long time
You run extra services
GPS (power hungry)
Bluetooth
Wi-Fi
Radio or FM transmitter
Video or audio out.
etc.
