It makes a substantial difference... I think.
No extra bars show up, but the signal seems more stable, even with the
retractable portion down. It's only 1-3/8" extended.

I wouldn't expect it to go from no signal to good signal.
In my case, it went from garbled conversations and dead spots in some
places in the house that would drop a call to garbled conversation
occasionally in some places, good almost everywhere else.
There are all manner of other antennas that might provide more gain.
There was even some guy who poked the stock antenna into a coffee can, and
used a Bluetooth headset while the v551 was sitting in a windowsill.
I thought of trying that, but never quite got around to it. I don't know
which band I'm using, so I can determine the offset from the bottom of the
can. 1900 is pretty close to the 2400 WiFi coffee can I use. If it's 850,
I need an 8" can.
