OK, I have been on ATT WS for years and I have been happy with the service. My
wife was on Sprint PCS and unhappy with the service. Neither of us used our
minutes (600 each) so we decided to do the family plan on my account at ATT and
she would drop Sprint. This would save us about $20 a month- not small change
when you are trying to pay rent, bills and feed 4 kids. That is when things
got murky.
We reside in Atlanta but my ATT WS is on the National plan and, when I moved
here from Chicago Illinois, I opted to keep my 312 area code number because I
had it for a long time and it would be inconvenient for me to change it. Dozens
of family, friends and businesses have it and I use it for text messages too.
However my wife, not being from Illinois, has a local Atlanta number on hers.
So I call up ATT and tell them what I want to do and they say "hey no
problemos" and ship us a new phone with a 404 number for my wife and, of
course, the new 2 year agreement. But upon review of the agreement, I note that
the phone is on a completely different plan at $30 a month for a paltry 250
Anytime minutes plus nights and weekends (for the same month, you can get 600
from T-Mobile). Furious, I call ATT WS and they some shit about "it didn't go
through because you cannot have a family plan in 2 different home areas".
Needless to say I am rather pissed off. I SPECIFICALLY asked the sales lady if
this would present a problem and she assured me it would not! Then it seems
that they tried to sneak one over on me. So today I called up to cancel and get
a Return Authorization for the new phone. They did cancel the account but told
me I would have to call up the sales dept Monday to get a RAN number to send it
back which makes me think they might try to talk me into keeping the extra
account. While I am happy with my account, after this I am not in any mood for
a sales pitch. So it looks like my wife will be going to T-Mobile unless they
want to sweeten the deal and make it worthwhile for me to change my number
which would be very inconvenient.

Sorry to hear your ANOTHER victim of ATTWS and their left foot not knowing
what the right foot is doing. This is SO typical of ATTWS. They will always
tell you what you want to hear, then do as they please and have some
chicken-shit excuse for why it happened.
Do yourself and the wife a favor...avoid ATTWS like the plague and tell them
to take a flying fuck on a rolling do-nut. Tell a supervisor WHY your
dropping service with them and you won't tolerate their chicken-shit games.
Also tell them you plan to post it on the Internet groups and tell
co-workers about them. Let them know for each person that actually complains
there are 10 more that will do the same and not say a word about it. Donate
your used ATTWS TDMA equipment to the salvation army for a writeoff and so
you won't do something stupid, like re-activate with them during a brainfart
or unreasonable moment. Personally I destroyed my V-60T and the Nokia 6160 I
bought from them because the Motorola V-60T was such a piece of
shit.....Eddie

You could be the angriest person I've come across. At least you are venting
on the newsgroup. Hope you aren't venting on the wife and kids. You
probably didn't mention it because of obvious reasons but another good place
to donate old phones are battered women's shelters.

Shawn.... yeah....I DO feel good "venting" on the news group really..for
many reasons. First off I don't want to see others swindled by ATTWS's
crappy biz practices. Second..many have no idea what rights they have
against ATTWS for what ATTWS can and will dish out if allowed.Third..if
people stand up to them it hurts them where it counts*IN THE BANK*.Profits
go down, shareholders ask questions and the numbers in the demo's show they
are assholes. The cellular world is a highly competitive arena, with GOOD
providers willing to give you a decent product for a fair/reasonable price.
No carrier is PERFECT, and never will be. It is a 2-way radio anyway you
look at it. However...all said...no one should have to have a less than
usable service crammed down their throat and held there by a contract. ATTWS
is riding a 3-legged horse in this race. TDMA technically sucks compared to
CDMA. GSM is still in it's infancy for ATTWS and it's a fact that where they
use 1.8-1.9Ghz it flat out doesn't get into the newer concrete/steel
buildings worth a damn. There are many more tech reasons I can give to show
why ATTWS is a bottom-feeder other than it's shitty biz practices but this
would be a 3 page novel.
I have personally owned a cellular phone on each carrier available in the
Los ANgeles area except the pre-pays (piggybacked anyways) and very honest
about my experiances with each one of them. If they were good I share that
too, if they are bad I tell others. While bad seems to propagate much faster
than good, thats not always the case.....Eddie

Well I am pretty happy with my phone and my service and if I dropped them, I'd
still lose my number. But my wife will be going with T Mobile I guess- unless
ATT sweetens the deal to at least close to what T mobile is offering,

You are right. I have decided at this time that I may well go on and switch my
number.

This is a very common situation for me, Care not being able to deliver
what Sales has offered. I blame the sales rep; I'm sure she would
have told you that you could get a Moldovian number if it meant she
would get the sale.

It's not just restricted to Wireless carriers, either; it's happened
to me with landline phone service, cable, etc. I've learned to just
not trust commisioned sales reps; before I buy anything I call a care
representative and double-check the sales promise. More often than
not, there is some "inconvenient detail" that the sales rep has left
out. I also try to go into a retail location and work with an actual
person whenever possible. At least that way I have a name and face so
I can walk back in to the store and speak directly with a manager.

Well today it just got even deeper. I gave in and decided to switch numbers to
match my wife's "home area" of 404-770-678 but then the sales lady said "oh!!!
we cannot do a family plan for you anyway because you are on a national plan
and we only do shared minutes on a local plan". So it was all for naught
anyway. So bottom liine is that I gave in- she gets a phone with the $30 local
plan separate from mine.
