I have a pre-paid AT&T account and I have asked ATTWS if it is possible
for me to roam in the Bahamas and no one seems to no the exact answer.
I would use my VoiceStream post-paid account, but there is no GSM in the
Bahamas. I have the ATTWS pre-paid phone to supplement coverage, if I
ever travel to an area with no GSM, I have a back-up. :-)

ATTWS said "you can use your phone in the USVI & Puerto Rico" and they
mentioned some other islands, but they weren't positive with the
Bahamas.......so if anyone has any insight on this one please let me
know.

Thanks,

I was in Nassau over New Years and my pre-paid ATT phone did not work :(.
It did work from San Juan thought, for what that is worth to you.

There is no roaming agreement last I checked with the Bahamas and ATT.
There website seems to confirm this:
http://www.attws.com/bus/sm_biz/ps/tdma_gsm.jhtml

My contract ATT cell phone with roaming enabled did not work there. The
Bahamas had analog service last I checked. Your only hope would be to
activate your phone on NAM2 as a prepaid down there.

I found the following blurb on the web which I offer without endorsement:

The Bahamas Telecommunications Corporation (BaTelCo) has automatic roaming
agreements with cellular carriers in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
BaTelCo's roaming partners include Aliant Cellular, Ameritech Cellular,
BCTEL Mobility, Bell Mobility, Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile, BellSouth
Mobility, Blue Ridge Cellular, Cantel, Cellular Holding, Cellular One Bay
Area Cellular, Cellular One of Illinois, Cellular One of Southwest Florida,
Comcast Cellular, Crowley Cellular, Dansbury Cellular, Pioneer/Enid
Cellular, MT&T Mobile, NBTel Mobility, Radiofone, 360° Communications,
Telcel, TELUS Mobility U.S. Cellular and Western Wireless.
If your home carrier has a roaming agreement with BaTelCo and your cellular
number is active in The Islands Of The Bahamas, you can enjoy cellular
service. Simply ensure that your phone is switched to system B and dial
away!

a.. To place a call, dial 7 digits for local calls and 10 digits for calls
to the United States and Canada.
b.. To receive a call, the caller must dial BaTelCo's access code
(242-359-7626), wait for the second dial tone and dial the roamer's cellular
number including the area code.
c.. Billing is a breeze ... There are no activation fees for Roaming in
The Bahamas and you will be billed via your home carrier at a rate of $3.00
per day and $0.99 per minute (plus toll charges for long distance calls).
Note: Roaming agreements are subject to change without notice. Additionally,
a carrier may have a Roaming agreement with BaTelCo but opt to disallow
Roaming in The Bahamas for some of their markets

The telephone for Batelco is +1-242-323-4911. Here is an interesting link I
just found and bookmarked on the Carribean: http://www.roamersguide.com/.

Thank you for your replies. Well I suppose I can live w/o mobile phone
service for 3 days. :-) I'll just use a pre-paid calling card, such as
those sold by AT&T (long-distance).
