Has anyone known of such mods.. ????

There is one problem with a setup like this. A standard 27 MHz walkie
talkie transmits and receives on the same frequency. A cell phone has
different bands for transmit and receive, the distance differs from
system to system. This means that you probably can't tune the receiver
of one cell phone to a frequency that the other can transmit on. For
GSM I beleive that there would be additional difficulties with crypto
and speech coding/encoding.

Nevertheless, we've come a long way when people find cell phones cheap
enough to compete with walkie talkies.
