But for the life of me, I can't remember how to write the boot
image *and* other data in one session. What I do now is write the
boot image as the first of a multisession and then write the
other data in a second session. But this method wastes time and
disc space, and I'm pretty sure I used to do it in one session.
One approach I tried recently is to select the CD-ROM (Boot)
option, point to the saved image file as the boot image source,
add other data to the compilation and then write them in a single
session. But it doesn't work. When I try to boot from such a
disc, it displays the message
"Boot from CD:
1. FD 1.44MB System Type(-06)"
and then hangs if there are no other storage media. When there
are other devices present, it displays the message very briefly
and then tries to boot from the other devices. I've tried three
different brands of re-writeable media with the same result.
Using SATA or PATA as the boot optical drive makes no difference.
Can anyone please help? (I use Nero 6.6.0.13 and WinXP SP3).

Are you sure about this? AFAIK, Nero does not create floppy images.

Bootability is preserved only for the last session.
The following is the correct procedure.

Maybe the boot floppy prompts for a drive in the boot process? Could you
post the content of the image file? In particular post the content of
any *.bat file.
Try experiment with the settings of "Enable expert settings" (in the
Boot tab where you pointed to the image file). First try change 'Number
of loaded sectors' to 4. Or, change to 'No emulation' and 'Number of
loaded sectors' to 4.

I can boot with a CD made the way I described, i.e., by burning
the nrg/iso image in one session and then adding other data in
subsequent sessions. I've used this method several times.

The result is the same when I use an image of an unmodified
Win98SE startup disk. When I burn the nrg/iso file directly
instead of using it as a FD image source, it boots correctly into
floppy emulation and leads to the A:\> DOS prompt.

I'll try that - when I have more time.
I've found a way to make a DOS-bootable CD and include other data
in a single session. Of course, it was always possible to do that
with a Windows startup diskette but I no longer have a FDD, and
even when I did, floppies are slow and modern floppies and drives
are so unreliable that I wanted to have a faster and more
reliable alternative.
What I've tried out (successfully) is this: I create a virtual
floppy drive, format it in WinXP as a bootable MS-DOS startup
disk and change the contents as needed. Then I use it as the
source of a bootable image and can also include other data in a
single write session.
But it still irks me that I can't remember how to use the nrg or
iso files except by writing them in a separate session. And the
method I just described requires mounting a virtual FDD,
formatting it and modifying the contents every time I want to
create a new bootable CD with other data.

(Let's start from fresh.)
What's the reason for writing the boot image?
Can't AutoRun and AutoPlay functions accomplish the same thing?
No. The object is to boot into DOS. Although I'm not a full-time
professional, I do a lot of work with and *on* computers. I often
boot into DOS for a number of reasons - quick general system
check, especially a newly built machine or one with a corrupt OS
drive, partitioning HDDs, ghosting and restoration of the OS
partition, etc etc. I also use other ways of doing these things,
but sometimes a DOS environment is the most convenient one.

Started afresh trying to understand what you are trying to do as adding
files by multisession and preserving bootable is not possible. The
reason is that Sector 17 (0x11) must have a Boot Volume Descriptor by El
Torito specification. (Sector 17 has the address of boot catalog and
boot image.) When you add files by multisession, Sector 17 will not have
the information. (I am really puzzled how you could have added files by
multisession, but still preserved bootability.)
One solution for what you want to do is add the files to the boot image
using an ISO editor like WinIso, MagicIso, UltraIso, etc., and burn the
modified boot image.
Any luck with tinkering with 'Enable expert settings' as I mentioned in
another post? Perhaps use for the number of loaded sectors the size of
the boot image divided by 512?

I don't know all the technical details of why it should or should
not work (I've never studied the El Torito specs closely), but
the fact is that it does work. It's something I do regularly -
with CD-Rs, CD-RWs and DVDs.

Another way I found today is to extract the actual boot image
from the saved nrg/iso files with ISO Buster. I save it as an img
or ima file and use that as the boot image source. I've tested
the method by writing the boot image along with other data and it
works.

Uh, no. It kind of slipped my mind while figuring out the method
I just described and the one I described in my second post.
