I have tried different media, reinstalling the software, I used the Nero
clean tool to fully remove the uninstalled software before reloading.
What follows is the contents of the Nero log file. I am getting similar log
files for both burners so am only including the most recent.
Can someone tell me whats wrong?

This is not a quality brand.

Try lower the burn speed to like 24x.

According to these the above errors point to DMA, disc and drive in that
order. Since the DMA is on, the most likely suspect is the disc. But
then you said you tried various brands. Have you tried Verbatim or Taiyo
Yuden?

cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, redbook.sys & storprop.dll for both drives

cdrom.sys and redbook.sys shouldn't be listed. Run Nero InfoTool,
Drivers tab and post back what it says about the two files. Are they
Microsoft? (Check also ASPI tab and see if aspi is installed properly.)
And don't know why STORPROP.DLL is listed. Does InfoTool list it?
Disable IMAPI:
Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, and double-click "IMAPI
CD Burning", click Stop, then set "Startup type" as "Disabled".
What drivers did you install after you update to SP3?
Cdrom SCSI Cdrom Driver version 5.1.2600.5512(xpsp.080413-2108)
redbook Redbook Audio Filter Driver version
5.1.2600.5512(xpsp.080413-2108)
When I click on ASPI I see two sections: ASPI Installation shows System
ASPI. The File listed in the bottom section is wnaspi32.dll and I have a
yellow warning at the bottom of the screen saying ASPI files are missing. I
can select Nero Aspi from the top menu and this warning goes green saying
Aspi is installed and working properly. If i go out of InfoTool and come
back in the file shown is the original with the warning. I cannot get the
Nero ASPI to default.

No its not listed in InfoTool

Done - IMAPI is now disabled.

I didn't install any drivers after SP3. So I guess microsoft.

Those are sp3 files. Beginning to think that Nero 6.6.1.15 may not be
compatible with sp3.

System aspi error means you cannot use other burn softwares that depends
on aspi. Nero uses its own aspi, the Nero aspi. No need to be concerned
about. Wanted to know if you have some oddball aspi installed.

It's also not listed on mine. But why listed in the Existing drivers
section?!

At this point the only thing I can (lamely) suggest is
uninstall/reinstall Nero using clean tool and see if disabling imapi has
any effect. If you still get the error with cdrom.sys and redbook.sys
listed in the Existing drivers section - the drivers Nero supposedly
don't like or conflict. I can only conclude that Nero 6.6.1.15 is not
compatible with sp3.
Or, if you are willing to go through the trouble, try the latest Nero
trial version - which should be sp3 compatible - and see if the problem
disappears.
(I did not update to sp3 because I read some problems. Going to track
down what the problems are and see if any software compatibility is one
of them.)

3. Go to the following registry locations and delete the key values for

(Right click the individual keys and select Delete)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
4. Exit Regedt32 and reboot.
5. Install Nero 6.
I'm still not happy.
I will try the advice on the latest post dated 13/02/09 at 23:15 and report
back.
Thanks for the help.

Wonder if DMA is truly on. Uninstall the drives in [Control Panel,
Device Manager] by right-click the drive and choose Uninstall. Reboot to
let Windows reinstall the drives. Check the DMA status by [Device
Manager, IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers]. Double-click the channel - most
likely the second Primary IDE Channel - and click Advanced Settings tab.
Current Transfer Mode should be DMA.

Should I delete the entries here ?
I will not reinstall anything until I get a reply back.
Thanks for your help
Uninstalled both drives, rebooted, Current transfer mode drive 0 = Ultra DMA

DMA is indeed on. Wondered since you could burn small files, but not
large files.

That's as it should be as you don't have any burn softwares installed
yet. The idea is to clean out the entries.

No.

Go ahead and install Nero. Then go back to the upper/lower filters and
post back what's listed there.

Was thinking that cdrom.sys and redbook.sys might be somehow listed for
LowerFilters.
Burn some large files to get errors and see if error log still lists
cdrom.sys and redbook.sys under "Existing drivers".
If so, uninstall Nero and try CDBurnerXP:
http://www.cdburnerxp.se/en/download
(The interface is similar to Nero and you shouldn't have much problems.)
>---------------------------------
I have been able to get my back-ups completed. If I try a small file in
multisession mode and let it fail. I can then send a large file to the
CD/DVD and it works. I am begining to think that the media is faulty but
only at the beginning of the disc.
I will download the software you suggest to see if this helps. I will also
buy some new discs.
Thanks again for your help

For the hell of it, if you have canned air, squirt some air to dislodge
loose dirt. And put in an audio cd and move the laser assembly back and
forth from track 1 to the last track. Hopefully this might help to
lubricate the beginning of track if the stickiness is the cause of the
trouble at the beginning of the disc.

If you are not making a headway, perhaps you might consider rebuilding
winxp.
