I can get it cheaply, but not for long.
Thanks a lot,

It is a good, solid Philips drive....

The HP4020i seems to be the same thing as the Philips CDD2000, but the
specs published for each are different in some respects (Philips claims
300msec access, HP claims 400msec, Philips says mode 2 gets you 720MB, HP
claims only 680).
My 4020i has been very reliable so far... no bad CD writes (partly due,
I'm sure, to the large 1MB buffer) , and the Windows 95 drivers and
*entire software package* are available on HP's homepage (have been since
April 12 - big leg up over other mfrs, although I'm sure their Win95
packages are probably starting to show up). Check it out at
http://hpcc998.external.hp.com/isgsupport/cdr/00index.html
I have heard, however, that there was a firmware bug that kept early
models of this drive (firmware revision 1.20 or earlier) from correctly
writing CD-ROM XA discs... this has not caused a problem with anything I
have done, (my drive, purchased in April, had revision 1.20) but it is
addressed at
http://www.4cdr.com/cd2cd/psx.html
with regards to "backing up" Sony Playstation CD-ROMs. HP has issued a
firmware revision 1.25 (as has Philips), which is addressed at
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/information_storage/surestore/cd-writer/firmware/fw12
5cdr.txt -apparently the drive's firmware is flash or EPROM based.
Assuming the Philips CDD2000 is the same as the HP4020i (sure looks that
way) with regards to the Adaptec 2940 (the following from Philips at
http://www-eu.philips.com/pkm/laseroptics/news/faq.htm):
"Unfortunately the Adaptec AHA 2940 PCI SCSI interface appears to have
some problems under Windows95 recognizing some brands of CD-R drives
including the Philips CDD2000. Adaptec is aware of the problem and has
written a patch to fix this small bug. Please contact Adaptec if you need
this patch."
Not such a "small bug" if you happen to have a 2940 (:>) Ironically, the
CDD2200 ships with the Adaptec 1540 (the HP ships with
BTW, before anyone asks, no - I don't work for HP. I'm just very happy
with the drive and, perhaps more importantly, HP's support.
It's a pretty good device.
With the AHA2940 in conjunction with Windows 95 there are
problems using the included software.
If you use the Easy-CD Pro software there seems to be no
problem what so ever

I just got the drive today, but haven't burned anything yet.
Before I waste any discs, could you be more specific about those
potential software problems?
Thanks.
