Whoops, I don't have my "Luny" junk mail killer set up for this
newsgroup at all, so the return address is valid as is. Never
mind...damn, now I'll just have to brace myself for a new blurb of
bulk e-mail. There ought to be a law...there probably is, but what do
those bastards care.

Hi all...I just had my CD-ROM drive replaced under warranty. My
Optics Storage Maverick 12X turned out to be very picky about which
CD's it would read. I took it to the store and they replaced it with a

Creative 1800 Infra. I took it home and plugged it in. At startup,
Win95 detected it without problems and made all necessary changes
to the system setup automatically. Everything works OK in Win95,
and the Infra reads all my CD's and works just fine.

My system is a Morse Ppro 200 with Intel VS440FX motherboard, 32MB
RAM, Millennium 4MB display adapter + RealVision Flash 3D accelerator.
The Win95 version is 4.00.950a.

My problem is in DOS. I downloaded the driver SBIDE.SYS from
Creative's site (first the big file with all the setup programs for
DOS/Win3.1, and then the latest version of SBIDE.SYS to replace the
older one that came with the big file - from their Infra update page).
I booted to DOS, ran the install and got a subdirectory tree called
SBCD containing the drivers and some other stuff. I replaced the
SBIDE.SYS with the newest version. My config.sys got the line
"DEVICE=C:\SBCD\DRV\SBIDE.SYS /D:MSCD001/V /P:168,10,36e"
inserted by the install program and my autoexec.bat has the line
"LH C:\SBCD\DRV\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 /V /M:8 /L:H".
(I removed the MSCDEX line from dosstart.bat and moved it to
autoexec.bat...I'm sort of old-fashioned :)

Win95 automatically added to config.sys the /P:168,10,36e switch
defining the address and IRQ (no matter how I try to change it, it
eventually gets changed back to /P:168,10,36e). Both SBIDE.SYS and
MSCDEX.EXE are in the directory C:\SBCD\DRV.

The problem is that SBIDE.SYS doesn't seem to get loaded. Every time I
boot to DOS mode, I get the error from autoexec.bat saying that there
is no driver MSCD001, and of course the CD-ROM drive is not
accessible. The /D: switches in config.sys and autoexec.bat match and
it seems to me that SBIDE.SYS never gets loaded at all, or then it has
the wrong address or IRQ defined - but I can't change them since Win95
changes them right back at the next DOS mode boot. The CDSETUP.EXE in
C:\SBCD says that the factory defaults for the /D: switch is /D:1e8,11
instead of the values Win95 forces into config.sys...Win95 insists
it's /D:168,10.

So now I have a CD-ROM drive that works perfectly in Win95 and a DOS
window, but not in real DOS mode. I'm running out of ideas. Any help,

anyone? Please answer through e-mail too, and remove "Luny" from my
address.

S.

P.S. Another weird thing is that if I install the Infra 1800 Suite, I
get an "Illegal instruction" error at every startup from detector.exe.
What's this then? Anyone else seen it? Just to be sure, I removed the
whole Suite from "add/remove programs".
