Bundled with a 4.2.20 plextor CD-RW came CDRWIN from cequadrat, also included PACKET-CD
this second feature is equivalent to direct cd but is announced with a few more versatile
details.
Also being of the same producer i wanted to try it in order to keep things stable.

But unfortunately i can't get it to work at all.
Has anyone been successful using this program?

Hereafter a description of my experiences with it.

The very first install failled when the system was restarted at the end of the instalation procedure
executed by the installation
procedure. System hung for 15+ minutes.

2nd attempt seemed successfull.

various strange errors happen:

1/ Check CD results seem strange,
-IDE cdrom A-Open 40x no errors or synch problems indicated.
-SCSI cdrom Ultraplex 32x also OK.
-SCSI Plextor 4/2/20 CD-RW gives on all speeds 246 sync errors, 247 read errors,
at the same time the progress indicator is always red while green for the other
2 readers.

2/ formatting a CD-rw media finishes successfull (several attempts on new as well as on
cd-rw's already containing data.
Acessing any such formatted CD-RW is impossible.

3/ Drag and drop in windows explorer gives error msg "no disk"

4/ Using the right mouse button "send to" function in the popup menu of explorer just
faills.
-after a few trials sometimes the function than dissapears out of the menu.

An uninstall of the program "Plextor manager" and of "WINOCD and PACKET-CD" followed by a
reinstall of only "WIINOCD and PACKET-CD", than Check CD gives the same error count on the IDE-Cdrom (but still green progess
indicator) as previously on the CD-rewriter which doesn't get any different result itself.

Now formatting a CD-RW still is ok.
Drag and drop in windows explorer still fails but the file dropped can be displayed in the directory list.
Any attempt to open / edit or copy results in the disk not being detected or a blue screen faillure with followed by a black screen
after hitting a continuation key due to a none refreshed desktop. the screen can be buildup by activating other programs using the
keyboard.
Fatal exception 0E
28:C145F11A in VXDCLUDFFS(01) + BEEA
Afterwards packet-cd is disapeared from the send-to menu.

System:

conected scsi devices: Plextor CDRW 4/2/20

logitec mouse PS2

Running programs:
w98 explorer
Adobe acrobat distiller assistant 3.01
matrox desktop navigator
flexi cd
plextor manager (removed before last install retry of winoncd and packet-cd)

Than reinstalling the plextor manager brings the packet-cd item back in the "send to" menu after restart but every attempt to use it
results again in the blue screen with the fatal execption at the same addresses as described above.

Afterwards reattempts trying to access the CD-RW via the "send to" menu result in a popup with message "cannot find the device
specified".

Upgrade with the downloaded Version: 3.00.185 after reinstalling the lot, my mouse behaves
unpredictable. With single and double clicks or right and left klicks not always recognised corectly independant of the software
application.

Copying of files to a CD-RW now seems to start but never goes any further tha very small files (less than 4K) and even than many
times incomplete. Like a small text file wit 80 characters linelength and only 32 lines, only 6 lines are copied. Mostly when
attempting to copy or move a bigger file to the CD-RW another blue screen crash is the result:
Fatal exception 0E at 28:C145F35b in VXD C2UDFFS(01) + C10B again screen stayng dark after

I have a Ricoh 7040A which came with PacketCD. I installed it, and it works
quite nicely. Unfortunately, I do not have the technical expertise to advise
you further.

Well, well, well ... This sounds tooooooooo familiar to me ;(

I own a Sony CRX100E IDE ReWriter, and have *never* been able to install PacketCD
on my system. In the beginning, even WinOnCD didn't want to write a CD. I even
tried 5 different types of CD software (of which only 2 worked), and waited for 1
month before trying to use the bundled software WinOnCD 3.6, and... it worked!
I wrote several CDs, and started to enjoy this software. Especially the cover
editor is very nice.

Now all this is 2 months' history. I decided to try to reinstall PacketCD,
because I could use its features now. Impossible for me to try to get it
OK. When I install PacketCD, I only get ONE extra field in the "context
menu" (Remount), though the manual and help files state it otherwise.
I decided to use the UDF format utility, and sacrificed 2 CDs that way.
I got the following error message:
An error occurred during formatting. The GRI function "OpenTrack"
returned an error: Power on, reset, or bus device reset occurred.

When I tried to get Explorer's sessions tab (the 3rd tab from a CD-drive
"information"), I very often got this error:
EXPLORER heeft een fout met betrekking tot een ongeldige pagina
veroorzaakt in module KERNEL32.DLL op015f:bff9d709.

Easy CD Creator reported the following concerning the "messed-up" CDs:
Disc: CD-XA; Sessions: 1; Tracks: 1. Session 1 track 1 type data address
000000 length 000877. 339998 free blocks.

Nero crashed with a nifty BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) stating "Fatal
Exception 0E at 0028:C003BA1A in VXD IOS(01) + 00001446. The current
application will be closed." Every time I try to access the "CD info" tab.

I am totally unable to modify the "read-write" settings in the "device" tab
of the CD drives context menu.

I even downloaded the updates for WinOnCD3.6, for PacketCD _and_ for the
driver for the CRX100E writer. Nothing to do, my computer doesn't want to
cooperate. Now the situation is even worse: when I restart Win98 when I
have an explorer open, and one of my "messed up" CDs is in the writer, then
when reentering Win98 the activity LED of the CDROM drive stays on, without
any activity. When I right-click now on a CDROM drive in Explorer, and go
to the "Information" tab, then I get only _two_ of the 3 tabs (the "sessions"
tab is gone). Moreover, I get rubbish in the "general" tab: the filesystem
is a 3-byte RUBBISH field (any character can be therein) instead of the "CDFS"
tag (or the so much wanted but never seen "UDF" tag).

Where is the problem? A summary of my system configuration follows:
AMD-K6-2/350-3Dnow CPU on a FIC PA2013 mainboard (VIA MVP3 chipset).
One stick of 128MB SDRAM. SoundBlaster 128 PCI @ PCI slot 2.
Diamond ViPER V550 16MB SDRAM AGP, and:
Pri. Master: Samsung HDD LBA, UDMA2, 6495MB
Pri. Slave: None
Sec. Master: AOPEN CDROM Mode4 CD-ROM 36X/AKW
Sec. Slave: SONY CD-ReWriter Mode4 CD-RW CRX100E
Driveletter settings:
C: 4GB partition
D: 1GB partition
(remainder of the HDD: Linux)
R: CDROM
W: CD ReWriter

LOOK VERY WELL BELOW: compare the two PCs: they BOTH have the VIA MVP3 chipset !!!!!

In contrast, a friend of mine has a Plextor PlexWriter 4x/2x/20x and a SCSI card,
on a FIC VA503+ mainboard (also VIA MVP3 chipset) and *is* able to write
PacketCD... Weird!

Any suggestions (defective chipset, ...) ?

Olivier

PS: besides this, the writer performs very well !

If you are running W95 (not 98), you may have old ASPI drivers. Got to
http://www.adaptec.com/support/files/upgrades.html and get ASPICHK.EXE and
ASPI32.EXE.

I had horrible time originally with my CD-RW drives on my FIC-VA503+
then I read the notes. They are not compatible with the VIA Bus-Master drivers
Once I uninstall the drivers and had the Win95 default ones installed everything
worked. I am using the RICOH MP7040A with WinOnCD 3.5

Yes, the VIA drivers are incompatible with almost everything which is not
a hard drive on the primary master IDE controller. Therefore I decided to
completely erase my hard disk, and install a fresh Win98 (Dutch), and do it
all over. Here follows the story (Friday afternoon):

1. Installed Win98, and just thereafter WinOnCD and PacketCD. When I open
Explorer, the system is unable to show me the contents of the window, and
HANGS. (This is due to the DMA bug in the VIA MVP3 chipset).
2. Rebooted, and tried to uncheck the "DMA" in the device manager for both
my CD-ROM and CD-RW. The system hangs when I go to the "settings" tab of
the CD-ROM and CD-RW.
3. Rebooted, uninstalled PacketCD. Now I can access the "settings" tab in
the device manager, and unchecked the "DMA" for both CD devices.
4. Rebooted, start Windows Explorer. Now I can recognize a previously
Packet-CD formatted CDRW media, and can just read the "CDFS" portion of the
UDF disk (which contains the files AUTORUN.EXE, AUTORUN.INF, C2UDF.INF,
C...@UDFFS.VXD and ReadMe.txt). I run "autorun.exe", this installs the
UDF-reader, and I restart the PC.
5. Reboot and install PacketCD (WinOnCD 3.6 disk, directory
"\WinOnCD\Win32\Driver\".
6. Reboot the computer, and for the first time of my life ... it worked!!!
I copied 4 files (smallest file 1KB, largest file 11MB), no problems...
======
B U T : I still had to install the hardware drivers (sound, video)
=====
7. Installed the SB128PCI drivers (which also included DirectX 6).
8. Rebooted, sound worked, BUT NOW THE PACKETCD DOESN'T WORK ANYMORE ;(

I did it all over yesterday evening. Installed *again* Win98 (without any
other driver patches from VIA), and installed WinOnCD & PacketCD, as I did
above. Now it didn't work anymore; it was impossible to use PacketCD.
I must say that now I installed the "basic internet options" and "direct
cable access".

\
----\ Thus there *must* be a problem with the driver names. Would the
+ renaming of the CeQuadrat drivers solve this problem? If yes,
----/ which drivers need to be renamed, and where do I have to do the
/ registry ?

Any ideas? I really want to use the PacketCD software!

Yup, and I think I found a way out (worked only ONCE, I tried about 5
times to reinstall my Win98):
1. Clean Win98(Dutch), without internet tools (no Outlook Express, no
direct access server, no modem access to PC, ...).
2. Install WinOnCD and PacketCD (normal set-up)
Since My computer idn't want to shut down, I continued with:
Run CheckCD, uncheck DMA.
[!!! It is ESSENTIAL that you uncheck the DMA _before_ rebooting, if not
the system wil hang thoroughly (VIA chipset bug with DMA).
4. Reboot, PacketCD doesn't work. Uninstalled PacketCD.
5. Reboot, install the C2UDFFS.VxD driver from an earlier UDF-formatted
CDRW.
6. Reboot, reinstall PacketCD (this time from the Control Panel, choose
the directory <CDROM-DRIVRELETTER>:\WinOnCD\Win32\Driver\).
7. Reboot, now it works!
[Now I get rubbish for the reported file lengths on the earlier formatted
PacketCD; I suppose this depends on the Packet length in bytes.]
8. Installed WinZip and upgraded the CeQuadrat software (WinOnCD and
PacketCD); you can find these at their site http://www.CeQuadrat.com/
9. Installed Mouse driver (4D+ Mouse Driver)
10. Installed the Diamond ViPER V550 drivers and switched to
1280x1024x32bpp, large fonts.
[Here my PC didn't want to restart Win98 (NOT reBOOT) automatically, but
hung at the "Restarting Windows..." text screen]
11.Installed SB128PCI driver _update_ (not the original driver).
12. Installed VIA PCI bridge patch
13. Installed VIA IrQ Routing patch (miniport patch)
14. Installed VIA USB filter driver
15. Installed VIA AGP driver
16. Installed DirectX6 from the SB128PCI OEM CD
17. Installed SB128PCI original drivers (Creative Audio Software).

If you want to know, indeed I backed my entire system up every two or
three steps, in order to recover easily in case the software wouldn't
work. I wrote everything (excl. WIN386.SWP) to a CDRW with WinOnCD
(flawlessly).

I hope this helps!

I'm using W98 and i get the feeling it's not the MVP3 chipset only, i swapped the writer with a colleague's yamaha on a Tyan Trinity
motherboard and there it works.
His Yamaha gives the same errors on my system but not on another pc with an Epox board with MVP3 chipset (don't know the exact type)
this guy has the same problems i have with a Ricoh writer.
I will do some expirements again with a new systemsetup in a few weeks changing to a BX chipset and a Mendocino cpu, but it would be
nice to know the exact cause of the problems.
