I am looking for a CD-ROM that I can use to look up the addresses and
phone numbers of small companies. Does someone sell a CD-ROM containing
all the phone books in the US? ...or at least the business entries from
all the phone books in the US? I am also looking for such a product
for Canada.

Has anyone seen such a product? Any info welcome.

There's a database on Compu$erve called Biz*File that contains address
and phone # of businesses in US and Canada, and it does seem to include
the really small ones that I need to look up. Unfortunately, they charge
$0.25/minute to use this database, and searches seem to take about 30
seconds each. Seems like an ideal application for a CD-ROM!

Yes, I know that one exists, I just got a catalog the other day that had
and ad in it for this type of thing. If you're interested e-mail me
and I'll look up the information (company, product name, price...) at
home and send it your way.

Yes, Phone-disc USA is what your looking for. You will have to request it
at your local software store, or look them up.

There's a program called 11 Million Businesses' Phone Directory that has
the info you need. It includes Canada. The cost varies....I've seen it for $18
and for $69 (Egghead). I find it pretty good, but it doesn't give you street
addresses....no numbers, just the street. The phone numbers and sometimes
fax numbers are included.

There is such a product called ProPhone USA. It is a 7 disc set with 1
business disc and 6 reaidential discs. We stock it at PCJ for $79.95 plus
shipping. Give us a call at 615-339-0235 to order.

Reseller catalog: Tiger Software, 1-800-888-4437

select PHONE -- $199.00 -- 4 cd's Complete Yellow Pages

You'll have to call and ask them, but the article only seems to mention

Tiger will get theirs at the same time everyone else does, which is still
at least a week from now. I know they have been in their catalog for months,
but that doesn't mean anything with Tiger. Also, their prices are actually
quite a bit higher than what we will be selling this product for. If you
want it, check with us and save yourself some money.

This sounds interesting, but do you by any chance sell the individual
CDs? I could use the on with Texas residences but I'd have little use for
the other ones...

Also, do they come with software for searching for keywords, phone
numbers, ect: for instance, could you enter a phone # and scan the CDROM
for who it belongs to?

Thanks.

It can search on 7 different fields, including name, phone number, address,
city, state, etc.

I have two copies of the Mid-year 1993 7-disc set left in stock. You can
have one of those for $49 and see how the product works.

Perhaps you can sell the business disc to someone else, but I can't break
up the sets myself due to my resale agreement with ProPhone.

Keywords, no, but you can search by name, street number and name,
city, state, zip, phone number and a couple other fields I can't
remember right now.

The 7-CD ProPhone is soon to be superceded by a 4-CD set with
"better compression" so the mfr told me today. (I'm writing a
magazine review of it).

And since we're on the topic, if anyone reading this owns or has
access to the 7-CD 4th Quarter 1993 edition of ProPhone, please
put the "Pacific" CD in your drive, fire up the Procd software,
input my last name "LASER" in the name field, hit return, and tell
me if the software locks up.

This happens to me consistantly and repeatedly with that one CD
with that one string in the name field. :(

Thanks,
Harv

Following up on my own post, after examining the underside
of the ProPhone CD that kept locking up on me I found a couple
tiny specks of dirt or pollution of some kind. I wiped them
off, tried asearch for my name again and it worked perfectly.
No more lockups.

Thus: dirt on a data CD definitely CAN and WILL affect its
performance!
