Hi,
Anyone have any experience to install a Philips CM100 CDROM with CM155
interface to a 486 ? I like to use the new MS extension driver MSCDEX.EXE
I have the new MSCDEX driver but...

1. I do not have the new driver for CM155 interface card.
(Someone suggest me to use the driver CM153.MSC but I do not know the
parameters. Any help?)

2. I do not have the documentation for the CM155 and CM100.
(Since Philips do not sell CM155 in Canada.) Therefore I need some
help.

There are two connectors/ports and some dip switches at the back of the
CM100 CDROM drive. Could anyone tell me what is the correct
dip switches setting ?
And which of the port (the upper or the lower one) should I connect to
the CDROM.

On the CM155 interface card, there are four dip switches. I think they
are for the setting of port number. Could anyone tell me what is the
correct setting ?

I really need help to get them working with the new microsoft extension.
Any help or direction will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I wish you luck. I have been trying to install a CM100/CM155 combination on
a 386SX. We have been using it on an AT to run Cambridge Scientific's CD-ROM
version of MedLine, and wanted to upgrade our system. The installation program
ran without difficulty, but when we tried to run the program itself we got in-
stallation-failure messages. To make a very long story short, I was finally
told by the tech people at Cambridge Scientific that the CM100/CM155 can't cope
with the speed of 386s.

If you succeed (or anyone else has succeeded) in installing this combination on
a 386/486, I'd love to hear how you did it.

Our switches are set 1-7 "open" and 8 "closed". The lower connector is for the
"lower" drive (e.g. d:) and the upper one is for the higher (e.g. e:).

If you have only one player and you're using DOS extensions (not necessary for
many apps), the lower one.

We have ours set with 1 and 2 "on" and 3 and 4 "off".

We went through this whole thing about a year and a half ago when we
went and upgraded PC's that had our CDROM titles on them.

We talked with Scott Burton at LMSI (719-593-4134) and learned:

The CM 155 controller card for the Phillips drive is NO LONGER
SUPPORTED and has compatability problems with the PS/2 model 30,
which will NOT be remedied by Phillips.

Additionally, the CM 155 will **NOT** work on PC's with a bus
speed of above 8 MHz. (It's an old card and that seemed plenty
fast at the time it was originally made.)

The CM 153 controller card IS CURRENTLY SUPPORTED and working in a
25 Mhz 386 clone (at Phillips), but it too has compatibility
problems with the PS/2 model 30 that Phillips is or will be
working on.

He also gave us a dealer near us from whom we could order the NEW
card and drivers. In our case that was:
Arrow Electronics
8300 Guilford Road
Columbia, MD 21046
(410) 995-6002

When I called them they quoted me the following prices:

CM 153 card 87.08
LZ 2011 drivers 36.14

for a total cost of $123.22 (US) and as I recall they came
in even cheaper!

The LZ 2011 drivers includes MSCDEX (version 2.20 at that time)
and CM153_1.MSC and CM153_2.MSC . Unfortunately the documentation
for the drivers DID NOT show the CM100 (which is an *OLD* drive)
and we ended up getting CM153.MSC from Grolier (as it was their
Electronic Encyclopedia we were running on the Philips drive).
The driver from Grolier worked where the other two would *NOT*.

The bottom line on this:
- Forget the 155 unless you're using an old original PC or XT.
- Order the CM153 card and install it instead.
- Get the CM153.MSC from your application vendor, if they've
got it. (Drop me a line if not)

Hope this helps.
