Hi guys.

I'm gonna tell ya: I did it. Yes, I did it.
I bought a brand-new "reliable" japanese Sony CDU-928e (IDE version, 512k
buffer, firmware 1.1e) last month.
I'll tell you something too: I did lost 5 CD's trying to transfer some files
from my HD to a CD...

I implore for some help.

Here's my story (configuration and whats happening to me):
System: Dell Dimension XPS M200a, P 200 Mhz MMX, 32 Mb RAM, 2 on-board IDE
controllers: 1 controller with Western Digital WDC AC33100L and Western
Digital AC35100L; the other controller with the Sony CDU-928e.

I have dual boot Windows 95 OSR2 and Windows NT 4.0 SP 3.
I tried to use the Adaptec Easy CD Creator that came bundled with the
CDU-928e and downloaded the trial version of GEAR 4.2.
When using Windows NT and running the burners, NT hangs up, goes to the blue
screen, and starts to dump with the friendly message on the screen:
"STOP 0x000000A
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Address 801e02dc has base at 801df000 - CDR4VSD.SYS
CPUID: Genuine Intel 5.4.4 IRQL: 1f Sysver: 0xf0000565", and so on...
I just cant use NT to burn my CD's, so, I turn to the glorious and dorment
Windows 95.

Several tentatives with both Easy CD Creator and Gear were made. All with
the same result.
I'd received a message of
"Write Operation was not successful
Write emergency occurred. Unexpected disturbance during write.
Additional sense code = 2030c00h" when using Gear 4.2, and when using Easy
CD Creator the process of writing (or testing) merely stops with no further
message.
I have tried to use Gear Replicator 1.2 and Adaptec CD Copier to copy an
entire disk, but I had the same problem.

I know something called buffer underrun, but I don't know how to fix it, and
why it is happening. I tried to close all applications including antivirus,
firewall, and so on, but the problem persists. I even tried to write at
1x - same problem. I went to Adaptec Webpage, and read something related to
choose 'disconnect' on the Device Manager for both CD-R and HD's. However,
I could made it only for the CD-R; the two HD's disconnect box were
unavailable to mark.

Please, any advice or help are welcome!

Best regards!

I had axeact the same problem. I figured out that two files in the IOSUBSYS
subdirectory needed for me a specific following to recognize the drive. The
files are C2REC.VXD and C2APIX.VXD. Rename the two files, keep them and
install the drivers again. It helped for me. I also brought back the
original situation and found out that my drive was just a normal CD drive.

I bought the same drive, with firmware 1.1e, and had nothing but trouble
with it. I finally returned it after seeing someone post to this group that
1.1k was the latest firmware. After my drive was updated to that version,
all of its problems disappeared. The drive works *great* now. I am
personally convinced that the 1.1e firmware is pretty buggy. I have yet to
find a way to update the firmware myself, though. Neither Sony or the
dealer is talking.
My suggestion: Ask the dealer to get your drive updated to 1.1k. If they
refuse, return it for a refund.

I've managed to get my hands on it, if anyone wants it, they will have to
mail me.

Well, if you bought el cheapo media, that could be one factor...
I've lost none! Every single one is a TDK of course.

Try out DirectCD from Adaptec (came with my Sony), it is excellent and
general prevents you from messing up data disks and pretty much makes the
CD-R an extra storage drive (write once only of course).

Yes, BUT (and this is the rub!) your I/O subsystem has to be fast enough to
transfer and supply data to your CD-R fast enough. Your hard disk may do
fine but the rest of your system may not be up to the task...

>Systen configuration:
>Microstar Mainboard
>AMD K5-166 Proccessor

I think the problems lie your system, the K5-166 isn't too much of a factor
since I burned with my ol' Intel P100 for a month before an upgrade.
However, the 16Megs of RAM is! Windows will be taking up too much memory to
run EasyCD Creator (Win95/NT are memory hogs) and need to use swap-disk.
Once it does that, Presto! Buffer Underrun.
I had 32Mb of EDO RAM and a Intel 430FX mobo and a 1.2 Gig Maxtor (pretty
slow). However, if I disabled all other background and time activated apps
(like screen savers and task schedulers) that caused HD access, it would
burn clean. Of course, I always ALWAYS test the burn first...

SCSI, my friend is a very wonderful thing for weak CPUs...
In general, your IO rocks in comparison with a standard cheap PC.

Nope, its your system... memory and IO to be more exact. My Sony hasn't
burped once yet. Of course, now I have a P2 and UDMA.

Thanks! I have made 5 cd's since I got this burner, and 2 of them are
coasters. I was discouraged. I had the 1.1e firmware, I upgraded
the firmware to the one you posted, (1.1k), and it runs great now!
Thanks a million.
