Cavestock is an annual caving convention held on Smokey Caldwell's farm in
LaFayette, Georgia (host site of the 1995 SERA Summer Cave Carnival). There
will be organized clean-up trips for TAG caves, a vertical contest, door
prizes, a raffle for rope, a giant bonfire, live music, hot tub and sauna, and
as always, the opportunity to meet and swap tales with fellow cavers.

The 2nd Annual Cavestock Spring Cave Festival will mark the start of the 1999
TAG caving convention season on April 16-18. Registration is $18 for the
weekend.

I think all the animosity directed at the Cavestock folk was totally
out of line last year, and I hope we don't see a repeat of this sort
of Balkanization going on in the caving community again.

I say boooo to speleopolitics . . .

I concur with Mr. Planze. After the brouhaha last year, I had discussions
with one of the Cavestock organizers, on conservation matters. This gentleman
(whom I don't know) seemed perfectly reasonable in his goals. Actually the
grief he caught last year made him somewhat leery of dealing with organized
caving at all. We're not here to condemn other cavers but to work together on
common goals, even though we may not agree on all the details of different
paths. We don't need to make enemies of other cave interested people. It is
much easier to help a friend see errant ways than enemies.
Tolerance, people!

Cavestock gets my vote...that is assuming they put out a real guidebook for the
area: one with current access information and directions to the local caves.

And no, I don't need a lecture on the ego filled reasons for keeping cave
locations a secret, that is unless the proponent wants to hear my lecture on the
psychological basis for why the common caver guru usually uses the
conservation/secrecy issue as a sounding board for their own emotional problems.

Flameproof coveralls are now ON...

since today is my last day on this job my real email address is: a secret
location...Actually I can't tell you because some Inet neophyte might not be
responsible enough to handle it without causing severe environmental damage to
the InterNet...
