anyone knows where I can find a map of Bear Cave, in Westmoreland
County? Is there a Grotto that has a copy and can send one by mail for
a fee? better yet, a PDF file online would be even better...

Dang, I remember this cave from years ago. I seem to recall a tribune review
story about 1979 that someone died in it. We went there as scouts ages ago
but I don't remember where we got the maps. Sorry.

Alexis,
The best way for you to get information about Bear Cave it to become
involved with the Loyalhanna
Grotto. They have a website started at http://www.karst.org/loyalhanna/.
While I lived in the area Kim Metzgar was the treasurer of the grotto.

Kim and Tom Metzgar have done wonderful things for the caves in the area.
Kim is chair of the Mid-Atlantic Karst Conservancy and can help you with
some information with how to cave softly and safely in Bear Cave. That area
is oft abused and the owner is sometimes disrespected. Please help keep
that cave open to the public by talking to Kim and getting tips about the
cave before you go. She may be able to give you the information you need.
(and please pay your two dollars into the milk box for parking - its two
bucks and buys an awful lot.)

You can find Kim by going to http://www.karst.org/kim.htm

Kim - Please email me if I did wrong by referring him to you.

Thanks for the reference Brian. I also note that the Bear Cave map is copyright
and is not freely reproduceable. By becoming affiliated with a grotto you may
be able to learn how to acquire an official copy of the map.
Also of note is that we have recently closed the cave area and our property to
camping. Too much wear and tear, vandalism, and garbage. So the Bear Cave are
is now open to visitation only from dawn to dusk.
