There are a number of them, mostly too close to civilization to do discuss
locations, even in general. You would do well to contact your local grotto
(the NSS home page - www.caves.org) lists the mailing addresses. I myself am
part of the Mother Lode Grotto (MLG), If you're in the Sacramento area, you
might want to meet us.

Note: even though some on this group don't like the NSS, they have still
formed their own groups of caving buddies.

Try these. Sorry, I have no way of knowing from here which ones are
actually closest to you.

be sure and visit us here if you ever get to Virginia.

Most the caves Mr. MacKagen mentioned, if not all of them are locatable on
USGS topo maps. Except for maps of Lava Beds National Monument in Siskiyou
County , most the the map locations of the caves are suspect.

Cindy is correct in her statements about cave closures. Most of the CA caves
do not have armed landowners to protect them, but the various public
agencies and corportate owners of caves are rather scared of law suits. They
would rather deny access, than risk much.

If you are new to caving, the adventure tours at several of our commercial
caves are a good, if muddy and trying introduction. If you are experienced,
contact one of the local caving clubs. If you are patient and willing to
help on conservation, survey and other projects, it will get you into a lot
more caves out here than you can find on a USGS map. Also, very few maps of
the west carry cave locations, and then only the commercial caves or ones
developed specifically for tours.

Yawn, some people will do anything for a little attention. Maybe it's a
self esteem problem. Ignore them, maybe they'll go find some other
place to feed on negative energy.

There seems to be some confusion as to the Federal governments role in
keeping caves located on Federal lands secret. The FCRPA of 1988 says:

"Sec 5a, Information concerning the specific location of any significant cave
may not be made available to the public under section 552 of title 5, United
States Code, unless the Secretary determines that disclosure of such information

would further the purposes of this Act and would not create a substantial risk
of harm, theft, or destruction of such cave."

Which simply says the government does not have to respond to Freedom of
Information Act requests for cave locations. Removing locations from published
material, e.g. USGS topo maps, is an interpretation of the law.

Second, what are the "purposes" of the FCRPA:

"Sec 2b, The purposes of this Act are-- (1) to secure, protect, and preserve
significant caves on Federal lands for the perpetual use, enjoyment, and benefit

of all people; and (2) to foster increased cooperation and exchange of
information between governmental authorities and those who utilize caves
located on Federal lands for scientific, education, or recreational purposes."

So the government is obligated to secure caves for the use of all people, not
just bats. Futhermore, the government is required to facilitate cooperation
between the People and the government for the recreational use of caves.

That is just one interpretation of the Law, not one designed to control and
restrict information.
