Hi all,

I'm building a small glass engraving studio and putting out feelers to see
if there is any interest in the following.....

Web sites that do animal portraits in oils, ink, pastels, etc are common.
What about having your cat's portrait engraved in glass? I'm talking
realism--right down to the eye sparkle and whiskers. The technique I use is
called sand carving.

The portrait can be deeply engraved on the back side of a mirror. When
viewed from the front, you see a 3-D image of your cat staring back at you!
A similar work can be done on other types of glass such as mugs and plates.
I have also experimented with simulated antique gold and copper finishes
that really look sharp. I want to eventually add the ability to do large
areas such as cabinet doors and table tops. I can also personalize with
initials, names, and logos.

Do you have a fovorite photo of your cat? I am extremely particular about
my work. I prefer to work from high quality photographs to see as much
detail as possible. Think of it. Nothing catches the light and lasts
forever like engraved glass!

I don't have a business yet, or even a web site. I'm just looking for a
little feedback in the form of people's reactions to this rather novel idea.
In other works--IS ANYBODY INTERESTED???

I'll be more than happy to answer any questions.

Ed

I`d be interested in seeing examples if/when you have a web site to show
them.
Sounds like a great idea to me.
Good luck with it, I hope it takes off for you.

[Yes, Ed`s post may be viewed as spam, but I like the sound of it so there
!! ].

What a lovely idea....I know plenty of people (myself included) that
would be interested in a good quality picture like this. Like you say,
the traditional media have been done and then some, but this is new to
me.

For me, the clincher would be quality. So many pet portraits look
tacky and/or generic.

Hope this helps, and the very best of luck on your venture. It's a
jungle out there, so I always have admiration for anyone who chooses
to strike out on their own.

Hmm...you don't want to post your e-mail address publicly but
you can view it on your post.

Suggestion: either use a mudged address (note the no spam
notice in mine) or use a free hotmail acount (notice I said hotmail
not yahoo, apparently yahoo is ending their freee e-mail serive).

Hi Natalie,

You're right. Althoug some portrait work is good, most belongs on the
bottom of a birdcage--or cat box in this case. Actually, since mine is
glass, it would be much easier to clean!

Thanks for your support,
Ed

Hello kenlondon,

If you're goofy enough to call me a terrorist, than you're more than welcome
to label my message as spam. I'm relieved to say I've had a lot of friendly
support for my idea already. So far, you are the only nut I've run into.

Have a nice day,
Ed

Huh?

In my book all advertising is spam. I hate spam, I
don't tolerate spam. I'll toleeate spam when
spammers start contributing to my ISP costs.
Right now they contribute $0.00 so I want to
see none of their spam.

Spam is the equivalant of getting junk mail
through the post office postage due.

Perhaps Ed thought your sig was aimed at him, not realising its a general
sig that you have ?

I think this ones different though, in that Ed didnt just post an ad then
disappear so to speak. Besides, Ed is looking for feedback on an [good
sounding] idea, which is different [IMO].

kenlondon,

I am new to newsgroups and relatively new to email of any kind. There is
much I need to learn. I tend to be literal minded, and If I misinterpreted
your sig, I am sorry.

In fact, I agree with your definition of spam. But I have done no
advertising, nor would I ever do so under any circumstance where it is not
expected.

I had a business idea. I needed to gauge people's response. I wanted to do
so economically (free is even better). What better place to go than to
animal owners? What's better place to find them than newsgroups? I even
have a cat myself! The subject matter overlaps. Why shouldn't I be
permitted to participate in the discussions?

I have not asked for a dime...only an opinion. I don't even have anything
to sell...yet. If I had not joined the group for this reason, I almost
certainly would have eventually just to take advantage of the Web and see
what's out there.

No hard feelings,
Ed
