My cat will eat anything put in front of her except for this. So now when I'm
buying her food I have to bypass the ones that contain sardines.

It's alright though - I still have a cajillion to choose from!

Hey while I'm thinking about this I remember one of the guys in the grocery
store telling me that that the cat (and dog) food flies off the shelf as fast
as they can put it on! That's a LOT of cat food!

my cat is going on 9 y/o. all she easts is dental diet. she does have bad
teeth and had a total of 4 of them fall out or pulled out. last night i put
some salmon in a little plate to see what she would do. looked at it and
then walked away. a new cat shop gave me dehydrated fish bits and i gave
her one dried and no interest. i gave her one in a plate in a little water
to hydrate it and again, no interest. my cat is weird. never tried
sardines.

I think the whole "cats eat fish" thing is something we humans made up.
Think about this - years ago before cats became domesticated, they had to
hunt for their food. As most of us know, almost all cats HATE water. So
with plenty of mice and rabbits and other small critters running around, why
would a cat try to go fishing for food when it required getting wet? I
think as they became domesticated we would feed them fish, which can have a
strong odor, which the cats couldn't resist.

I have some cats that go nuts over tuna water, others just ignore it. Just
like people, cat's have food preferences too.

I gave up trying to get cats to eat sardines years ago - I haven't
tried the current population: some of them will eat tuna in oil, which
I had also given up on because none of the cats I gave it to would eat
it.

I try to keep at least a forty pound supply of dry cat food and dog
food on hand because the store is often out of the brands/flavors I
use. That's not enough of a stash, but I don't have room for much
more.

In all the years I hadmySiamese, she would not eat anything with fish

sardine, but she wasn't eager to finish it.

My cat loves tuna, we bought her some sardines once as a treat; she took one
look at those little dead fishies looking back up at her, and gave us an
expression like "what the #%$£ do you expect me to do with that?", I think
it was the eyes that bugged her out!

I agree with you here. I think the occasional fish flavoured cat food is OK
if the cat likes it.

Fish tank - they used to try to get thru them through the glass, tried a few
times from the top until feet got wet. My friend has a cat that likes to
drink from the toilet - with front feet in the water. He's also stake out
the fish tank from time to time, knocked the hood into the water a few
times, he kept going back for more until she got a new stand. For the most
part, mine stay away from water.

And to be truthful, was watching local program called Pets & Their People,
and that is what the guy told the host about cats not really fishing per se.
It made sense to me since most of mine abhor water (one fell in the toilet
the other day, was out and gone quicker than I could blink).

I've also heard from vet techs at shelter seafood is not good for growing
kittens - something to do with taurine and eye development - so I generally
stay away from it since I almost always have kittens (fosters).

And I gave up on the fish tanks - the fish have nothing to fear from the
cats - I kill them all! :O

I do know that a steady diet of fish can't be good for a cat, or judging from
the stray wharf cats at Galveston. They hang around when the fish-cleaners are
working. They get tossed all the fish they can eat. But they look *awful*.
They're so dreadfully skinny and sick-looking. It's horribly sad.

I know vets used to recommend staying away from seafood if cats had history
of blockage or UTI - too much magnesium and ash. But this was years ago,
and I think (one would hope) that the pet food manufacturers have cut back
on the amounts of magnesium and ash in food.

I go nuts when it's time to go shopping for cat food (which is almost
daily) - I like to buy by case if I can - they have case of Friskies, 36
cans - 1/3 of the cans are seafood. I rarely give them seafood (for the
latter reasons plus I don't like the smell!)

Those poor kitties - I guess it's a way to live, but what an awful way to
live. Probably got river rats as food too. I wouldn't be able to go near
the wharfs - I'd be in tears!
