I hope someone out there can help me with my dilemma..

My cat, Sylvester, is an avid sock, towel, dishcloth, (anything he can get
into) chewer! Nothing is sacred! He recently chewed the fur lining around
my moccasins off!

Every on of our tea towels has holes in them... I know, I need to be more
careful and make the towels, socks, etc are put away - but, no one is
perfect, and he picks up on it!
He drags everything over to his water dish.. and munches away at it.. (and
trust me.. he is well fed.. so he doesn't "need" the fiber ;)

Anyone heard of other cats doing this?? It's the oddest thing!

The fur lining thing I can definitely relate to! My mom lives up in
Yellowknife, NWT and sent me a beautiful hand made parka with fur lining
along the hood. I hung it up in the closet, but our closet is only blocked
off by a curtain not a door (stupid loft apartments!). The cats absolutely
would *not* leave that thing alone. They drove themselves bonkers clawing
their way up to where the hood was and trying to rip off pieces of the fur.
I eventually had to put the parka in a box under the bed so they would
leave it alone.

I also have a teddy bear that was made with fur from one of my great
grandmother's old fur coats. It has sentimental meaning to me and I wanted
to display it. Well, it is proudly displayed in a box under the bed
alongside my nice parka. :-)

Jennifer,
It is called wool sucking and it is generaly a bad habbit that happens when
a kitten is weaned off of its mother to soon. They never had the chance to
outgrow the nursing instinct. If you sit and watch him he will make sucking
sounds as he chews. There really is no way to break this after they are
adults other then keeping the items out of his reach and sight.
If you notice him eating large quantitys of the fabric you may want to keep
an eye on him incase of blockage or give him some cat hairball remedy to
help it pass thru his system.
Good luck with your boy and keep the towels up.

Some of our cats throughout the years have been "noozers" (see, we even gave
it a name (verb:to "nooze"); I really think it is the early
mother-separation thing as you said, some of my favorites would suck and
drool on piles of clean clothes from the dryer, kneading with their paws all
the while........it never got any worse than that though, no one ever
actually consumed the cloth! We always thought it kinda cute, but silly, to
see old cats doing this, looking very much like overgrown kittens nursing on
their mother-cat........

Maybe your kitty is part moth? :)

One of mine has a grocery-bag obsession going on. I worry he's going to get
impacted one day from it.

Sophie the Hellcat likes string - whether cotton, plastic or whatever. One
time she ate an entire 2 foot piece of string, and it came out intact the
other end. She's 4 years old now and still fights us over every piece of
string she sees.

My male loves to chew on carpet.:o) I have no idea why and any attempts I have
made to stop him from doing this have failed. If you figure something out I'd
love to hear it!:o)

My cat Zoom has a habit of eating things not normally edible as well. She
loves to chomp on cardboard, plastic bits, and those stupid fibers that
appear on the scratchy post as the kitties wear out the carpet. It drives me
nuts because then of course she yacks stuff up onto the carpet ( why is it
NEVER the linoleum?). I bought her some cat grass from the pet store , she
wont touch it when its all green and healthy, she waits till its all dead
and dried out then nibbles on it continuously. This has curbed some of her
weird eating however I still have to watch her around cardboard, and spray
her with the water bottle if I catch her.

My Siamese sucks on about anything. Favorites are the carpet and the other
cats. I bought them kitty grass also, and they wouldn't touch it either.
