I just found out that Peace Lilies are poisonous but my cat has been
munching on mine for about a year.

I feel like a horrible cat owner, I don't know how this plant made it past
the checklist when I first got that cat.

I found out because kitty got sick and I found a bit of Peace Lilly in his
vomit. He got sick a few other times recently and I'm guessing this is why.
I also caught him nibbling on the Peace Lilly a few times recently so I'm
hoping each time was because he was eating the Lilly, not because of renal
failure.

As much as I hate hurting living things, the Peace Lilly is done for.

The cat will be going to the vet tomorrow but in the meantime I am wondering
if anyone has any relevant experiences or advices?

Has anyone lost a cat over a Peace Lilly? Are Peace Lilies highly poisonous
(I have not found a list that specifies 'how' poisonous various plants are).

The fact that my cat threw up the Peace Lilly has me hoping that the fact
that his system rejected it is good thing- rather than letting it make it
all the way through, but as you can see I know next to nothing here.

The cat is active and seems to be himself but I've read that cats hide
things right up until the very end. I'm hoping the vet will order a urine
test to check out his kidney. I read about kidney transplants too; he's had
one surgery but this just sounds super-expensive.

Hopefully I'll learn something tomorrow!

Thanks,

David

Okay, I can stop preparing for emotional strife by calling my cat "the cat."

Buddy is in the clear. I took him to the vet and they ran a 10 minute blood
test which showed that his kidneys and liver are functioning great.

The vet said many people mistake their types of lilies but if it was indeed
a Peace Lilly (which it was), then they are usually not as toxic as most
other Lilies. He said he had seen cats take just a few nibbles off of the
leaves of other Lilies and end up dying in the past. He also said symptoms
sometimes take 24-36 hours to present themselves.

We didn't rush Buddy to the vet because he had been nibbling on the plant
for months until we realized it was poisonous and was causing him to get
sick. The vet made it clear that in cases of serious plant poisoning it is
very important to get the cat in ASAP so they can flush the toxins out of
its system before they do more damage.

I feel like we dodged a bullet as bad cat owners.

Hi David - I hope you're still there even though your post is 10 years old. It's after hours and the vet is closed. I just discovered my cat ate several leaves from a small peace lily plant. Did the vet you saw have you do anything? Did they take blood tests or anything? Or was it just a consultation? I'm wondering if the information online is sufficient and if I should just keep an eye on the cat, or if it's a MUST that he go to the vet. If they can't do anything for him, I'd rather spare the expense, but if they can, we'll go.
