Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me with some information. We are a small
family business making classic car & motorcycle badges. We bought the badge
making business from Lucas about 25 years ago, which included a lot of old
moulding tools, many of which we never used at the time. We are now going
through them and making short runs of production. One of the tools is for an
old Lotus badge. We have made some of them decorated in black and silver,
and would now like to make some in the original green and yellow. However,
we need to know the exact colours to do this correctly. Can anyone please
assist us? We really need to borrow an original green and yellow badge if
possible, which we would return together with a free new badge. A photo of
the black and silver version is shown in our catalogue, including the
dimensions, for reference, at www.classicbadges.com in the CARS, OTHER
section. I'm not certain which models these badges went on either, so any
help with that would also be very gratefully received.

Thank you.

I presume by original you just mean a *proper* Lotus badge. Well, I
can't lend you one, however I know a man who probably can - he mast
have 100 of them.

Give Alan a call at Specialised Paintwork in Caversham, Reading. 0118

the old Lotus Badge to their hall of fame ...

Hi Simon

There is nothing "improper" about the black nose badge. The only Lotus works
carsin the sixties that had black ones were Colin Chapman's car and a car
which belonged to the head of marketing (forgot the name)
I think a black nose badge goesvery well with a chrome orange car,
especially with the famous "Tipler" Elise.... ;-)

Cheers, Joerg

Not strictly true... The black badge was on my +2S. It was a
commemorative issue on production cars in late '60's. To honour a driver
killed in an F-2 crash at Hockenheim in '68: One Jimmy Clark...

mebbe you've heard of 'im?? Graham Hill was then teamed with J. Rindt.

Those were "the days"...

Can't remember what I meant by "Proper" badge, but didn't mean to imply
that the black and silver was not "proper", I think I just meant "real"

Of black badges...
The early round black and silver badges marked the loss of
Jim Clarke as far as I can think. The later black and gold
badges that appeared on Esprit and Excel was the JPS style to go
with the GP car livery. Non of these represented special editions
of any car as far as I know.

Hope this is of use...

Greg.

Hi Greg,
As Dr E. mentioned, I am talking about the plastic horn push badge, rather
than the nose badge. Did the cars above have black & gold horn push buttons?
If so, is it worth making a batch? We have a colour match now for the green
and yellow - thanks to everyone for the help.

Julia

My 86 Excel SE had a black horn push in the JPS style,
not sure about the others though.

According to Graham Arnold, the Lotus Sales Director who ordered the
black badges, there is no significance to the colour, they just wanted
to try a few in that colour. there was no intention to commemorate any
driver or incident. My +2 (1969) has a black badge and it looks better
against red paint than the yellow/green one. My bronze +2 (1973) has a
yellow/green badge, and that looks just fine...

As I recall (and please take this as opinion only), the cars earlier
than series 3 Elans had the yellow/green horn buttons. My 1965 MkI Lotus
Cortina for example. My '69 +2S is black 'n silver, as is the '67 Elan
S-3 (I just checked ;-). When JPS colours were adopted on the Europa TC,
those buttons were black/gold. I believe that scheme "stuck" for a long
time.

I would think there'd be interest in the yellow/green button, and I'd
suggest getting in contact with C. Neil and Dave Bean Engineering for
marketing, too.

Always wondered who made them! I have one left in "new spares" and it
wasn't boxed. The steering wheel for the Elan is the same as the Triumph
Spitfire, if my feeble processor serves me rightly.

So all these years I've been labouring under a false notion... s'pose
another "Urban Legend" come to light shouldn't surprise me.

My red 1969 +2 had a black badge, which had been chipped from a shunt
before I got it. I replaced it with the green/yellow as that was all I
could get.

Hello Julia,

I have just found your post on a google search relating to lotus horn button colours. I am particularly interested in a black and gold button as used on the JPS esprit s2 1979

The black and silver, green and yellow are quite common however there are not many black and gold. Your post mentioned that you may be able to re produce them.

Can you help me with this

Best regards

Hello Greg, yes I did realize the post was old, but I thought I would try anyway. Still looking for a black and gold horn button.
