I heard that the name lotus came from when Colin Chapman was first selling
his custom cars. The cars were labeled at the top of his list of cars: Lot
u/s (for lot unsold). I sales person read the list and called them a Lotus.
The name stuck from then onwards. I don't know if this is true but it was
told to me by someone who worked with Colin Chapman in the early days. In
fact, he was one of the only employees who was fired and rehired by Colin.

I have also heard the same story, but I have also heard that it may be
because Colin named the company after the Lotus flower.

I heard that it was the flower, and that the original garage had a dirt
floor and that "out of the mud grows the Lotus".

By that logic, it's only a matter of time before TVR release the Deathcap GT

'In the boot grow the mushrooms etc...'

Featuring a red bonnet with several white racing circles and silver gnome
hood ornament complete with fishing pole.

I'd heard that Hazel Chapman is the only person who knows the true
story to this.
Anyway, Colin Chapman was renowned for using drugs, and was perhaps
inspired by Lord Alfred Tennyson's "The Lotus Eaters" (which is all
about eating hallucinogenic flowers, tripping, etc.)?

A long shot, but I'd always fancied the perverse idea that there was a
less than innocent explanation. Too deep... I'm off to get a life...

It is a little known fact that Chapman got the name from a chinese take-away
(The Lotus Garden) he and his mistress visited during a particularly arduous
night on the tiles in Bangladesh.

Or did he...

Met an ex racing driver a few years back who knew Colin Chapman when Lotus
was still in it's infancy - he mentioned something about a label on a shoe
box.... but I'm not convinced.
