Hi,

Has anyone found a good cure for stopping those anoying roof leak from
the front corners of the hood seals ? Sometimes if you get the hood on
just right it won't leak, but it's a bit too fidly. As soon as it
becomes wet in the corner it will start to leak (i.e when you open and
close the door). Upon closer inspection you can see a tiny gap between
the window, hood and roof strut so I think all it needs is a tiny bit
of extra rubber or tighter fit to put it right. Anyone with any
solutions ?

The only way I've found to stop them it the moment is to put the car in
the garage!

Get a hard top, but that probably isn't what you
wanted to hear!

And also not necessarily a solution. Mine still leaked when I first had
the hardtop fitted. It's useful to give an idea of the age of your
Elise when asking questions (e.g. the last 4 digits of the VIN) since
Lotus have a policy of "continual improvement". The roof and windows
have had a number of revisions over the years. My Elise is finally
virtually leak proof but it took a new hood, window mechanism and an
extended trip to Lotus (FOC thankfully) to get the windows adjusted
correctly. I know some NG readers have adjusted their windows
themselves since dealers tend to be pretty cr*p at it.

I'm puzzled as to the reference to putting the hood on "just right", I
wasn't aware there was a wrong way! Isn't there a little notch in the
middle of your windscreen rail for lining the roof up with?

I used to have leaks from both front corners at the same time so when
zipping round the local S-bends I could experience the delight of being
hit by drips from each corner alternately!

Definitely a cure, bit on the expensive side though.

Get a hard top, no leaks and contrary to some people I find it quieter than
the softie.

kath - no torrent of anti hard top comments please, your just jealous.

Hi all, thanks for the replys.

Mines a 98 (S) vin 4238 so I would thinks it's fairly new. I'll bring
it to the attention of the Guys at Motorway sports and see if they have
can come up with anything. ( I should be in their good books cos I've
put a deposit down on a an M250)

I am toying with the idea of a hardtop. The lotus one looks good but
I've been quoted £1500 fitted and painted. The Moto-build one is
cheaper but doesn't look so cool.

Many Thanks
Gary

I have a very early Elise, Number 491, and I have very few leaks. I have
found that spaying the corners with scotch guard tent sealant has stopped
almost all of the leaks.

Also the windows MUST be adjusted correctly making sure all of the bolts are
tight helps (If there loose then the windows have allot of play and can lead
to leaks).

On the newer roofs lotus have added a rubber coating to the part that raps
around, so I might be worth checking to see if you have the newer roof and
if not asking the dealer for one under warranty

Lenny, thanks for the reply.

Before I'd read your reply I had just gone out today a bought a tin of
Fabsil fabric waterproofer so I'll give it a try. Yes your right on the
windows, I have a little play, prob from some earlier work I had done
on the car so I'm gonna have them adjusted.

I'm still tempted with a hardtop as well !

Cheers
Gary

Fabsil will work for a bit - but getting the orientation correct is
absolutely key. I've found that popping the allen bolts into the sockets and
doing the poppers up on the cant rails first usually ensures a 100% central
location.

the elans the same i used that flexible black rubber sealant adhesive and
applied it all
around the top of the window from where it meets the hood. much better..

of course since it hardly rains here, thats another suggestion..

Nice discussion here. I have found lots of information here. And also want to tell you guys about the roof repairing option with the Liquid Rubber. http://www.epdmcoatings.com/liquid-rubber.html
