I've found one or two on anime-goods sites, but the construction isn't quite
right and they have printing on them.
Anyone know where one of these might be found, or where a pattern can be had?
It looks like it might be possible to modify an existing kaban bag, but those
ain't cheap either.
Do you have a URL for a specific picture? The first 5 or 6 pages of Google
Images didn't show Lain with any kind of a bag.
Googling for "randoseru" shows something like a highly-constructed
rucksack or daypack with rigid walls and a flap cover.
I saw something like that this weekend, but with an American twist:
It was an unconstructed ballistic nylon (I think) messenger bag, with
a back pocket that unzipped to a set of padded shoulder straps that
turned it into something roughly the same shape as a randoseru.

Not too surprising. Those are going to be advertising tie-ins, and quality
construction is not going to be a key issue.

Again, if you can provide a URL for a picture, I might be able to help.
Be aware though, that well made bags/luggage are not inexpensive.
This is the only one I can find off-paw that shows it pretty well.

Randoseru isn't really the one I'm looking for, that was my mistake ^_^ Those
are -really- not cheap! (I believe they're intended to last through all 6 years
of elementary school)

That's what I bought (I found a kaban with the Lain-face line art which is no
longer in production). It looks like I might be able to make a cover of sorts
for that out of tan canvas with mock leather straps (all I really need is to get
the outside looking right).

Hmmm ... Seems to me, that when Wilson's Leather was having their yearly
"Warehouse Sale" down at the State Fairgrounds, I think I saw something
like that or similar.
That might mean, of course, that it was a closeout; and they don't carry
it any more. It was also several years ago; and they had dozens of
different kinds of similar bags, mostly all leather, in huge piles on
table; sorted roughly by type. You might want to look at camera-bags
too; not just purses.

I have no idea from that description what Ed's looking for, but the
bag in that picture is a fairly standard leather book bag. ISTR
having one when I was in Catholic School (grades 1 through 3).

OK. So what you're looking for is a classic briefcase, in
brown with a single clasp on the front flap. The closest
thing I could find easily was a "Donald J. Trump" signature
briefcase (no, I'm not kidding) at ebags.com, but it was
in black. Good price though at around $70.

{An energy-efficient compact fluourescent light bulb briefly appears
shining less brightly than the "Replaces xxx-watt" sticker would suggest
across Ed's balding pate.}
I'm guessing you want this bag for costuming rather than daily use?
That changes things some. You might try poking around your local office
supply warehouse store (Staples, OfficeDepot...). I'm pretty sure I've
seen something that would pass in one of those stores. The other places
to try right now would be Target and WalMart. With back-to-school just
beginning, they might actually have something.
Spending the kind of money that a workhorse bag is going to cost for an
occasional-use item is just silly.
If it's for costuming, also check your local thrift and resale shops.
The one in the drawing you linked was exactly like the one I carried
for years in grade schoolin the 60's -- but it got put away in the
basement and only resurfaced when we were cleaning out the house after
mom's death. So it went to St Vinnie's in 1994.
Or you can try eBay, searching on satchel and briefcase and excluding
purse and luggage set in Accessories. this one

loks like it's just what you want... and there's three days left on
the auction.
