A long time ago,
when Marsport on the planet Mars,
was new and all sharp around the edges,
there lived an old coot.
Now, he wasn't grouchy too much,
sometimes he just pretended to be grouchy,
but from time to time he was grouchy.
Some folks had a hard time telling,
the difference.
Maybe he did to.
From time to time,
he did good things for folks,
without lots of fanfare,
loud talking,
or making a big deal out of it.
He did it because he wanted to.
He didn't make sure someone,
was watching when he helped others,
nor tried to get his name in the newspaper,
nor on the television.
Didn't make a movie of it.
He just helped out when he could.
Why there were a few times,
he didn't speak up,
when someone else got the credit,
for the gift.
It didn't matter to him,
who got what in the way of credit,
for the good deed,
he just helped out,
whenever he could.
When he was alone,
he got out his old outfit,
a great big red coat,
trimmed in white fur,
his black snow boots,
the peaked hat,
with the small ball of white fur,
on the end.
Some of the guys down the hall,
would come over,
and they would remember and chat,
quiet like,
what it was like long ago,
to make toys and give them away,
all in one night,
but with all the satellites up,
around Old Earth,
it was too dangerous to do that,
anymore back there.
So they just sat and took a break,
over on the north edge,
of Marsport,
on the fourth planet,
from our Sun,
and bided their time,
until someone started telling,
the old stories about,
Saint Nicholas,
and Santa Claus,
the toy shop would reopen,
spreading joy once more,
is what they would do,
but for now,
sometimes late at night,
you could hear echo down the hallways,
of Young Marsport:
"Merry Christmas !
and to all a Good Night !"
Nobody knew where it came from,
nor who said it,
a few oldsters,
figured they better start telling,
some of the old stories,
from back on Old Earth,
about Old Saint Nick,
his toys and the sleigh ride,
just in case,
Santa and his Elves,
had moved with them to Mars.
