Greetings, all!

I know that we haven't been around much, and I wanted to get you all
updated on some of what's up with me and Denny.

First: we're still around, still fine and still together.

Second: Denny installed Windows 7 on his computer last weekend, and
still doesn't have Usenet access set up yet.

Third: we both found Second Life, and are rather addicted: live folk
music concerts, neat graphics, cool toys, etc. And friendly people,
too. No, it's not here. But it is neat...and it has a Callahans
incarnation, though frankly I like our version MUCH better (the SL
version is pretty much empty any time but Tuesday at 5:30 West Coast
Time and 5:30 Friday West Coast time).

Fourth: SHARED JOY!!!!: Denny finally talked me into at least a
virtual marriage, and in return for the delay I agreed twice...so
we're having two virtual marriages in SL. Friday, 11/13, and Sat.
11/14. Not binding, but still fun. And I'll think of you all there,
when the time comes.

(think of us at 7 pm 11/13 Pacific time, if you wish. That will be the
modern, 'old hippie' wedding, and I reckon y'all would fit in there
right well. ;-)

Hmm. I had (almost) zero problems when I upgraded. even with the
stuff from nVidia on my computer that Windows and HP kept warning me
about. (Now, I did have back all the way out, restore the computer to
factory specs, reload Vista, and then upgrade to WIN 7 again (but it,
apparently was an incompatible driver problem with the add-on wireless
I had installed. Since I got my Ethernet connection working just
fine, thank you, I removed the usb wireless interface and have been
fine since.

Gad, how to explain.... ???

Second Life is a virtual WORLD. I've heard that it's the size of
Connecticut now.

A person joins Second Life, creates an avatar (like some folks do
here, except that one can see it!), and wanders around. Folks have
built a version of Stonehenge there, Dublin is there, and so many TONS
of other places that I haven't seen them all yet.

I just went sailing there tonight, for the first time. I have ridden
on a flying carpet, on a dragon (one of Denny's 'looks'), in a
spaceship I got for free... ;-)

I've toured the Star Trek museum there, which is a wonderful spot,
including a 'flight' piloting a shuttle and being fired upon.

Last I saw, it had over 1 million residents. Some of them may be the
same person with another avatar, but I doubt everyone has another
AV...I don't and Denny doesn't, for two.

A lot of neat stuff is available free there, and you can buy a plot of
land for about 50 cents and then spend $6 per week to keep it. You can
get houses and furniture for free, and the first 30 days you are there
you get a lot of special stuff for free too.

It doesn't technically cost anything, but if you go to the live
concerts it's expected that you'll tip since most musicians aren't
paid by the venues. Then you tip the venues as well.

And of course the nicest hair and body types and looks/tans/etc. will
likely have to be purchased, though not always.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Life

There are a few jerks there, and a ton of really nice, talented
people.

It's an awful time sink, and a lot of fun, Wes. It's kept me up way
too late lots of times. ;-)

There are real universities that offer classes there, and I know a
real-life secondary teacher who's doing her thesis on the applications
of SL for education.

It's quite a place, Wes!

Second Life is a a "Sim" type of online role playing "game" where you are
free to try to come up with a "new life" without all of the psycological
upbringing, racial/class/etc.. legacy/real-life BS. (You still have to work
and spend money, (and you can "cheat" by using real money to buy things for
your virtual character.

I got curious about Second Life, based on your description and started
investigating. Is
this something where if you join and then don't have time for a week
or so you find your
'stuff' all gone, or can a 'casual' visitor have fun without a huge
investment of time (or money!)?
Between running the motel and dealing with hubby's on and off health
issues I barely have
time to check in here so I don't want to start something new if it
'demands' time. On the
other hand, when RL gets too much and I need a mini vacation, this
sounds like fun, so
if I get sucked in and stay up all night once in a while, that's
another story <BG>

I also noted that Win 7 isn't supported yet, so is it working smoothly
for you?
Inquiring overloaded minds want to know!

Thanks ;-)

No, and yes.

You create an AV, and that's yours/you. All your 'stuff' is carried
with you, in your inventory--nothing happens if you're gone for a
week; it's simply that in the first 30 days you get special freebies
you don't get later. But no biggie if you don't grab them.

And you aren't required to spend any money. Again, if you attend a
live concert it's considered polite to donate to the musician and the
venue, since no one's getting paid otherwise.

If you go to a place and like it, it's considered polite to donate
there too. These places spend a fair bit of money just paying the
'tier' for their land and their other expenses, and usually only make
money to operate through the donations they receive.

But it's up to you if you stay at any place long enough to feel
compelled, or go to concerts, or choose to donate at all.

But...bear in mind that $1 USD equals roughly $250 Linden dollars. And
I seldom see donations to musicians over $200 L, or to a place for
over more than maybe $50L or $100 L.

It doesn't demand time, it sort of seduces it out of you. ;-)

I was hesitant to even start if I was going to wind up having to spend

I checked with Denny. He says that it works fine on Windows 64 bit,
which is harder to please than 32 bit.

But be sure to check out the hardware requirements, and be prepared
for lag. The graphics at SL tend to bog things down sometimes!

There's a tutorial area where you can get used to the controls without
having to worry about such faux pas.

I just wish there were more people at Callahan's Place (New Conch Republic
(242, 172, 22)). Every time I've been there, the Place has been empty.

Not that I do SL much. I don't socialize with strangers any better in Sl
than in RL ;-).

That's actually the old address for Callahan's, Morgan.

And folks tend to 'hang out' less together in such places in SL, I
think partly because you can take part in group chats anywhere, so you
don't have to be there to hang out with the folks...plus there is SO
much to do.

As I'm not exactly a stranger, email me (not munged) and I'll give you
the names for Denny and me.

And you'll find Callahans packed if you walk in at 5:30 West Coast

the "fog distance" so the system doesn't waste a lot of time showing

Aside from that, our desktop system is -not- SL-ready, so I have a
couple of "chat-only" interfaces for SL there. One is for blind

But my "incompatible" laptops are definitely SL-ready. I've done all

Thanks, Dole's Orchard Peach, please.

The reinstatement thing I've gone through - it's best to just restart
with a new email address, especially since it's all automated.

The next step after that is you are on Orientation Island, where there
are four tutorials to walk through. I took my time with those,
they're fun and one does need to know that stuff for SL. (I made the
mistake of trying to fly ... I found out the hard way that once one
has flown off Orientation Island, it will -not- let you fly back.)

Here's a warning, though... SL is not a money sink, like you were
concerned about. I have been inworld for a couple of years now, and
haven't spent more than $2.00, US dollars.

But it does take time to do it, and SL can become a time sink. I
haven't taken the time to dress up my avatar and get it new body parts
or a new skin, and so it doesn't look as good as other peoples.
Someday, when I have the time, I will. The same thing goes for
learning SL's construction skills and building scripts; they take
time, too.

(enjoys the Dole's Orchard Peach that Mike has delivered)
