There are many of us living in the
"Far Western Region of the Original

along with the voluminous posts that
characterize this specific region as
fraught with all the negatives of
humanity. An appreciative Brit such

is quite different than what seems to
be the messages of the cantankerous

Save for an occasional firestorm, some
huge mud slides, winter flash floods,
a plethora of drive-by shootings & gang
warfare, some crooked politicians . . .
you get the picture, the place is idyllic
and quite pleasing to the senses. We like
to refer to our homeland as La La Land.
Enjoy.

ps: that 4.5 (Richter Scale) tremblor

You also forgot the occasional massive riots.

Depends on what movie you're talking about. If it's the cowboy movies,
then hell no. There are many movies that portray LA fairly accurately.
Some overdue LA's good aspects, such as the baywatch type stuff you
mentioned in your website, and some overdue the bad such as Boys N'
the Hood and Menace II Society, or even Replacement Killers for that
matter.
>Do you REALLY want to know what it's like to live here?
This is far from a realistic portrayal of what life in SoCal in
general and L.A. in particular is all about. Sure, you're right about
a lot of things to some degree, but you've magnified it exponentially.
I've never had many problems travelling the freeways outside of rush
hours, especially weekends.
>Check out my website then.
I'd recommend that the Brit balance it out by regularly reading
laweekly.com and diveinlosangeles.com if he is to read your webpage.
>Sure I'm 'negitive' about L.A. That's because it SUCKS here.
It has it's bad parts, but most of America between the rockies
Appalacians sucks as well, just in a different way. Which may be your
cup of tea, but for anyone looking to live in an exciting and
interesting place, middle America is about as far from it that one can
find. If the British guy were to come here, he might find SoCal far
more preferable to Fargo, N.D. or Topeka, KS. Sure, it may be safer
out there, no doubt, but I wouldn't be safe from the boredom that has
overwhelmed me when living there.
>I used to love it here. But after 42 years of seeing it go down
>the toilet, you'd feel the same.
Btw, fleeing to another city doesn't solve any problems, it only
prolongs them until the big city problems catch up with middle
America, as is happening all over the place. Only confronting problems
solves them. You hate LA so much...have you ever participated in any
grassroots organization to "take LA back" or do you just sit there
idly wishing you were living in Madison, WI while concurrently
attempting to demolish LA's tourist industry by encouraging people to
not visit and to persuade the good people of LA to run for the hills?
People have to get over this notion that running to somewhere else is
a solution. In fact it is a major in factor in the crude status of our
downtowns. Well, I think Palmdale is a perfect example of what we can
expect in middle America in a few years. Palmdale was originally a
flight city of LA and the SFV. People could move there for the same
reasons they might move to Cheyenne, WY. Cheaper property, safe, no
gangs, traffic, etc. A few years later, everybody else "got hip" to
what was going on and relocated there, including the gangs, taggers
and nazi skinheads. What was once a safe haven from Los Angeles has
become a desert microcosm of LA. The same can be said of the
megalopolis outskirts of the inland empire. Simi Valley seems to be
pretty intact, and it is probably attributable to a greater sense of
community there than is to be found in LA. So when you keep blathering
about leaving California, just keep in mind that the very problems you
are attempting to leave are only a few footsteps behind you if the
problems aren't confronted head on. If you hate the LA city council,
well then do something about it. If you hate gangs, well then become
active in the community and put tougher legislation on the board to
crack down on them. If you don't like illegal immigration(as you said
you feel like you're in Mexico on your page) then organize to
crackdown on businesses that hire them. If enough people feel like you
then it will happen. But doing nothing but complaining accomplishes
nothing. I remember seeing on the news a story about some town in
Arizona where some militia/vigilantes had decided to take back their
community and patrol on horseback themselves. And they were
successful. Although the militia types may not be my cup of tea
idealogically and politically, I gave them credit for "standing
ground."
>Sure.. your 'dream' may be to live here, but I can assure you,
>it will soon turn into a nightmare,
Well, the biggest nightmare I could have is to wake up living in some
moutainless, drab, bland nothing of a town such as Des Moines or
Omaha.

There are many great towns in California. Especially the coastal towns
like Santa Barbara, San Juan Capistrano, Newport Beach, Huntington
Beach, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Santa Monica. I haven't spent much
time in Ventura, but it looks nice. And the Mexican border is only a
short drive away and there is plenty of interesting culture, music and
food south of the border. Although not in California, I've heard other
Pacific cities such as Portland, OR and Seattle are great.

Don't waste your time. Some of the things he says are true but he is
too biased by a xenophobic superpatriotism and love for a " Middle
America " that never really existed outside of TV. Anyway, some of your
fellow Englishmen, the Clash, described this place quite well in their
song " Safe European Home ". I think the song was actually about Florida,
I don't think it was about here per se but was just about the USA in
general. But its totally true.

What was wrong with you ? I guess you merely hadn't known anything better

Not exactly. You're half right Bruce. I'll give you that much. To
be truthful there are some good aspects to SoCal. Most of 'em are in
my part of town ( Santa Monica ) which seems like something out of
the Costa del Sol or Malta.( COmplete with large Brit population ) IOW the
tackiest Mediterranean tourist trap is the
best we have to offer, and it doesn't come any better than that here. Theres
also some pretty nice scenery in the mountains, and while the clubs, bars,
and nightlife suck compared to many places, they're better than many
others as well. The women are better looking here than in most of the
USA, although quite weak compared with southern Europe.Bruce's problem is
that he cannot accept that the USA as a whole bites the big one, and that
the least American aspects of here are in most ways the best aspects. The
problems which he thinks of as being un-American, are VERY American. I
guess hes never been to Detroit, Chicago, etc. Too bad we didnt wind up

I am not all that familiar with the South Bay area since I live in the
San Fernando Valley 45 minutes to the north. But I have heard that
there are nice neighborhoods in Long Beach. It also happens to be the
area that produced Snoop Doggy Dogg. So you just have to know your
geography. One of LA's peculiarities is the stark contrast between
nice neighborhoods and good ones. You have Palos Verdes(near Long
Beach), one of the nicest, prettiest and wealthiest areas in America
yet alone LA, which is right above the industrial jungle of Wilmington
with the poorer surrounding places nearby. In the San Fernando Valley,
you have only a couple of blocks between wealthy business districe The
Warner Center, and the almost 3rd world barrios of Canogo Park.
>HOWEVER, I must say this. sadly, and ironically, I had a sister murdered in

True. Many people have made the mistake Herder makes in assuming that
middle America is a paradise on earth and have ran into the same
problems they thought they were leaving instead of confronting them.
These "flighters" will never learn. When weeds pop up, you don't run
to the part of the lawn with no weeds, and when weeds start popping up
there, run to another part without weeds. Logic would tell you that
sooner or later you'll run out of havens. The weeds need to be stamped
out before they have a chance to become overwhelming.

Not really. the middle classes of the inner city tend to move to the
suburbs furthering the economic decline of these areas. Crime is
supposedly down, but not by any huge margin. The corrosion of inner
cities is a serious problem in the U.S. and much of it has to do with
middle class people fleeing and taking their wealth with them leaving
an economic vacumn behind them. That is why downtown LA is probably
about the worst place you can find in any first world country.
>Does

Only when it comes to buying fruit and picking up movers to help with
furniture.

Good question. It's about supply and demand. It *costs* to live in
this state. Since Cal. is the most populous state, naturally housing
costs will reflect this. Outside of the major cities though, housing
cost aren't much different than that of middle America. You can buy
some pretty cheap property in California if you don't mind living out
in the middle of the desert.
>My wife moved from LA to East Texas ranch country, and

There are many whites that are forced to live here because of the
entertainment industry, the computer industry and aerospace, et al.
Btw, many blacks have fled LA as well and moved to the south. Maybe
even in number equaling whites percentage wise.

Tell me about it!
Actually London is not much better except for the gun situation. London
is basically like New York City with gun control. ( I know NY has had
strict gun laws since the twenties but they are effectively undercut by
the leniency of other eastern states like Vermont and Virginia, whereas
all of Britain's neighbours have equally strict laws - Germany's are
even stricter. For those who associate gun control with " liberalisimos ",
it is important to remember that the gun laws in the UK were made stricter
by the Tories and that British conservatives have generally favoured
strict gun laws for most of the century. It is only by accident that this
has become a liberal issue, basically because only Democratic Party pols
have been assassinated. If GOP members get assassinated, watch the Repub-
licans do an about face on the matter. Actually my pro-gun friends seem
to expect an end to the right to bear arms far more than anti-gunners ).

It had to do with low property values. The rents there are cheaper than
downtown LA, east-central Hollywood, or even South Central. Actually the
Antelope Valley has become a true counterpart of the many suburban slums
that ring other cities, like Nezahualcoyoatl and the rest of the " Ring of
Misery " adjacent to the Distrito Federal, or the scummier parts of the
Paris banileue, Getafe near Madrid, certain parts of New Jersey, etc.

Portland is pretty nice for the western US cities. It has a civilised air
about it. A friend of mine who lives in Berne, Switzerland, said that when
he takes the plane from Berne to Portland, it would be like not leaving
the same city except for the fact that he has to change planes in LA. I
can see that. I've never been to Seattle - I've heard many different
things. I know plenty of people from Cal. have gone up there and there is
resentment against them because they have brought the crime of California
up there with them. From what I've heard Seattle is like a cross between
LA and SF. Vancouver is supposed to be very nice though, and certainly is
a favourite with the film industry to shoot things as its a lot cheaper and
the labour laws are more lenient.

Jeff, places like Montana and N. Idaho were made for people like you.
Why don't you please depart for one of these areas A.S.A.P. We
certainly can do without you in LA.

Here is a joke I read in Reader's digest when a lot of californians were
moving to washington/seattle:
Three men went into a bar one night, a man from Texas, one from California,
and one from Washington. They all stood up at the bar and the Texan yelled
out, "barkeep! Gimme a bottle of your best Tequila!" The bartender brought
the bottle, whereupon the texan tossed it up in the air, whipped out a
pistol and shot it while it was flying. The bartender yelled, "what in the
hell did you do that for?!!" The texan replied, "I'm from texas, texans is
tough, and we got lots of good tequila in texas!" The californian then
called out for a bottle of the best wine they had. The bartender set it in
front of him, and the californian tossed it up in the air, grabbed the gun
from the texan, and shot the wine bottle airborne. The barkeep asked him
also, "what in the hell did you do that for?!!" The californian said, "I'm
from california, we're tough too, and we got lots of good wine in
california!" Then the man from Washington called out for a bottle of their
best beer. The bartender brought it to him(albeit wincing as he did so),
whereupon the man tossed it into the air, grabbed the pistol from the
californian, shot the californian in the chest, caught the bottle on its
way down, popped the top and started sipping it. Finally noticing the
incredulous looks from the bartender and the texan, he said, "look, I'm
from washington, we're tough too, but we got way too many californians
there, we know you can never have enough beer, and besides, this bottle
might be returnable."
