Just keeping it alive, folks ;-)

So, how's the Christmas season going so far for everyone else? We're
still waiting for the real Christmas rush to hit, although I got a
rude awakening to what it might be like yesterday. The boss had to
take his wife to the hospital, so I got to work a full boat, 9:30 a.m.
'til 10:30 p.m. Days like that I can live without, but I'll be on
overtime by Thursday, so my paycheck should like it ;-)

Don't even talk to me about Christmas. I haven't even started yet. I have
to survive this last week of papers and exams, first.

Christmas at our house always seems farly low key. Maybe it has something to
do with sending most of our christmas pressies overseas in September so they
can go surface mail.

We've got our Christmas tree so that helps but having lived in the UK until
1991 I'm used to a cold maybe white Christmas. BBQs on the beach and sun
doesn't really fit in with Christmas time for me. It always seems really odd
even though we've been in NZ 11 years.

I think maybe I'll be getting my shopping done today. And we're doing
the tree on Monday. And then I'm done, finished, kaput. : )

That must have been a very hard adjustment to make!

We've had a similar problem with Thanksgiving: we spend it in
Mexico (with the rest of my side of the family), which was a bit
disconcerting when we first went. Now, we either have our
traditional Thanksgiving meal on the Sunday we get back, or (like
this year) just before we go.

Yes, I can remember doing that when the kids were small. The cats didn't do
*too* badly this year. When I took the tree down yesterday, I only found 3
or 4 ornaments that they had batted down and played with. And none were
broken!

We had roast turkey, giblet stuffing, gravy, rice, green bean casserole,
cauliflower w/cheese sauce, wheat rolls, cranberry sauce, and a few other
things. I think I used every pot and pan in the house (or at least the
dishwasher person said I did!)

Yeah, but now I've got to make room for all the stuff my mom gave us.
She didn't let me down, either. We couldn't get everything home 'cause
there were 3 large things that weren't going to fit in the Rodeo even
with the seats down and the car empty. Mom got Sarah a play kitchen and
an easel, and she got Caitlin a large easel; Cait's been wanting one for
years, and she finally got one this year. Mom will bring those down
after I get the tree out and the family room organized again. Most of
the other stuff was small enough to fit into 3 large trash bags. A
couple things didn't fit; she got Ryan a Wisconsin Badgers football
jersey and a UCLA football jersey but got my extra-large size kid a
large in both. She's gonna return them and give him the money instead
so he can buy more PS2 games. Fortunately, she got him the correct size
sweatshirt from the WWE store in Times Square; that would have been a
bitch to try to return <g>

> PS: Got your card...thanks!

And I still have more to send out. I was such a slug about getting
things sent out on time. Maybe if we got real seasons here I'd be
better at being prepared for the winter holidays, but that's not gonna
happen any time soon.

World Wrestling Entertainment, formerly World Wrestling Federation; they
had to change their name when the World Wildlife Fund actually won their
lawsuit over the use of WWF. Ryan wanted a specific sweatshirt
(Undertaker, I believe) that was only available through official WWE
retailers, and, well, whereas we get the major events out here - I've
taken him to see Raw twice now and am gearing up for the next time it's
here in Anaheim - we can't buy official shirts and stuff anywhere but at
the events. Mom visited my sister in Maryland and made a side trip to
New York, et voila! The kid got his shirt.

My friend's son recently went to see the Boss. ;-) He said t-shirts were
$65 - ugh. I always preferred the ones that had the dates of the events on
them. My son still wears one from a Led Zepplin concert in 1977. It looks

Yesterday was almost a waste of a whole day, and I hate when I do that.

It was entirely too cold to go outside to play, and Hubby worked ALL DAY so

Today my biggest ambition is to go through the entire house with a roll of
paper towels and the windex. When I'm finished with that chore, I'll get
back to my book. ;-)

I feel that way about the whole weekend. I've not been doing much at
all, outside of work...fighting a flu-sinus thingie. I did get a
burst of energy yesterday, and I went through all the Christmas
decorations and tossed some stuff and repacked other stuff so it's
now consolidated into 3 plastic storage bins and a garbage can (for
that odd-sized stuff) instead of
falling-apart-from-being-moved-a-zillion-times cardboard boxes.

Finally, after being here over a year, I've got everything to the
point that I could pack up the house in two days and not agonize over
something important being misplaced. I guess moving from 1800 square
feet to about 1200 square feet makes you realize there's a lot of
stuff you really don't need. ; )

It's turned cold here again. And today, at about 3:00 it was
sleeting. An hour later, the sun was out and the birds were chirping.

I didn't bring down *everything* for Christmas. So it all went back upstairs
very easily & quickly. Maybe next year ;-)

Both..and them some....insides of windows...comp & tv screens...pictures in
every room...and the french doors in the DR; it's amazing how much glass is
here. ;-) TTTT..(I just made that up- to tell the truth ;-) Hubby brings
me home this foam glass cleaner (instead of windex) it works very nice and
it *aims* better than liquid. It's prolly more $$$ than the dollar store
blue stuff...it even has a GM part # !! LOL ;-)

I'm pretty well stumped. Was the first one from him, too? I take it
from the hint that he's another left fielder, and either from a city
around Boston or around the same time frame as when Williams played
(then again, I *may* be overanalyzing this ;-) ). The Mick was a
center fielder, so was Joltin' Joe, no clue ;-(

Oh, BTW, I forgot to once again thank you for reviving my interest in
reading baseball books. The trip to Border's ended up costing me $160,
but I could afford it, and almost all of it was baseball books. I
finished up "Nice Guys Finish Last" and have started an *excellent*
oral history of the Orioles, called "From 33rd Street to Camden Yards"
by John Eisenberg and have gotten to where he's discussing the year
before I became an O's fan, '66 when they won their first World
Series. After that I have books by both Cal Ripkens, Jr. and Sr.,
let's see (wanders over to book stack) ...

"Weaver on Strategy" by The Earl of Balmer, "Cobb A Biography" by an
unknown to me author (Al Stump), "Ain't the Beer Cold" by Chuck
Thompson (who *I* remember as not being as good as Jon Miller, but he
*did* make the Hall of Fame and I want to see if I can figure out
why), "My Turn At Bat" by Teddy Ballgame, "The Duke of Flatbush"
another autobiography. I also picked up from the bargain table a Tom
Clancy novel that I'd somehow missed (my father must be falling down
on the job, usually if I miss one I get his copy when he's finished
it) and "A Flame of Pure Fire, Jack Dempsey and the Roaring '20's" by
Roger Kahn. And, since they were heavily promoting the 9th book in the
Wheel of Time series, I picked up the first, so if I like that I have
at least 8 others to add to the shopping list ;-) All in all this
should keep me reading and dreaming until at least Opening Day ;-)

I can't remember ever getting anything for Valentine's Day, other than
cards from my parents, but the most *remembered* Valentine's Day gift
I ever gave was to my sister. She was probably somewhere between 6 and
8 at the time, I picked up a small white teddy bear at the drug store
(probably either *on* Valentine's Day or the day before, knowing me,
and no, *I* really don't remember, but she sure does) and gave it to
her. She might *still* have it packed away somewhere, I know it was
still prominently displayed in her room when I went away to college.

So guess what was one of the gifts I had an eye on for the boys this
year? ;-) Smaller than the one I gave to my sister, but these little
bears had backpacks, which they both carry (like their father), so I
had my eye on them. Unfortunately, when I saw the supply was dwindling
I went in to the store today and checked them out, each of the bears'
backpacks has a heart inside it with some feminine endearment written
on it, "Angel" or "Princess" or the like. Oh, well, I already have one
present for each of them bought, but that's geared more toward the
older one, I still have to find something that's geared more toward
the younger one ;-)

Yeah, chocolate is a problem here, as it interacts with the youngest's
meds. He can't have anything with chocolate in it within two hours of
his medication (morning and night), so that pretty much leaves lunch
time only, and I don't *need* him bouncing off of the walls at that
point ;-)

I'm going to look at those bears again, I *really* want them to work
out, maybe the "Angel" ones wouldn't be too bad for boys? I was hoping
it was something they could clip to their backpacks if they wanted,
but that doesn't seem to be the case, but maybe that's alright too,
since I've only seen girls doing this.

Me, too. I think chocolate is the only thing I've ever given my kids.
Although, as you say, stuffed animals might have been less hazardous!

I think the best Valentine's present I ever received was the first
Valentine's Day that Merritt and I had together. He wrote me a long
handwritten love letter. <sigh> He's a sweetie. :o)

LOL! You are too kind! Hmmm, memorable Valentine's Days? I remember sending
my kids stuff from Germany one year because I had forgotten to leave
something for them with their Grandparents... I remember signing all those
cheap cards for every kid in class and struggling to remember everyone's
names so no one got left out. With 50 kids to a class, that was never easy.
Nope, nothing else.

Thanks Kim!

I'd be happy with some rain. My sinuses just don't like this nonstop
dry weather. And DW with a sinus attack is *not* a pretty sight...

Amen to that! :-) I'm on an Orioles reading binge (working in the
first book of "The Wheel of Time", looks like I'll be picking up the
others in that series shortly), having finished the oral history of

I have up to volume 7 in paperback, and I could save you some money and
send them your way if you like. I also have #8 but haven't read it yet.
#10 just came out in hardcover, so I'm woefully behind. That's okay; at
the pace the series is progressing he won't ever finish the story <g>

*Tell* me about it ;-) Is it snowing down there? They've upped the
prediction here from 4-6 inches to 6-8, there was at least an inch on
the ground when I was making my way home and the plows and sand trucks
were *just* coming out (two of them were sitting at my last bus stop,
a third was actually plowing just in front of the bus coming the other
way), apparently the state is trying to save on salt since they've
used up so much already this winter :-(

That's some serious salt consumption. We don't have any snow here. It
sleeted for a while today (and I cringed, because everything here
grinds to a screeching halt when there's even a *hint* of wintery
weather) and they're saying we may get something this weekend - snow
or ice. It's just raining right now, and while the sound of it hitting
the roof is nice, I'm already tired of muck and mud.

I can actually afford to get them now (it is *so* nice no longer

But, but, ... isn't muck and mud part of the Spring that you were
looking forward to? ;-) We ended up with around 7 inches, and yeah,
they're calling for another inch or two tomorrow night, but it's
funny. For all of my gritching about them not getting started on
plowing the roads, by the time I started out to work at about 1 p.m.
they had things pretty well under control (which I could *not* say
about around 7 a.m. when I woke up). By the time I got off of work at
around 10, it looked like that 7 inches had come a couple of days ago,
not just ended 10 hours previously. Looks like they made the right
decision on their limited resources, hopefully they handle this next
(smaller) snowfall just as well ;-)

Well, as I'm not planning on rereading the series in the future - the
books just seem to get longer and longer as he goes on - since I don't
have the time to just sit and read, I won't miss them <g> Email me your
snail addy, and I'll find a box to hold them and get them on their way
when I next get to the post office, probably Tuesday since I've got
other things that need to go out, too.

Is it all gone yet?

I think maybe we've turned the corner. The lows have been in the
upper 30's, low 40's, and highs up near 60. That is uncommonly nice
around here for mid February. I ain't complaining...the sooner the
heater goes off, the sooner my utilities drop back down to a
manageable rate.

Nope :-(

What was supposed to be a dusting Sunday night turned into an
interesting little snow storm Monday afternoon, too warm for it to
stick anywhere except in the grass. Lows tonight are still supposed to
be in the teens, and with 30-40 mph winds it feels a *lot* colder.

And apparently the O's camp *did* open today, or so I heard between
the weather forecasts calling for *more* snow this weekend. Why do I
have the feeling that I'm going to end up like Charlie Brown, standing
on a snow-covered pitcher's mound yelling "Let's play ball!"? ;-)
