There are also 3D CAD modeling softwares that also are used for steel
detailing work. A couple of these programs include Tekla (X-steel)
Structures and SDS. These programs involve the inputting of beams,
columns, bracing, ladder, roof joists, stairs, handrails and
miscellaneous components as members into a 3D model of the structure,
then automatically detailing these into 2D generated drawings (shop
fabrication and erection). But these programs can do more than only
producing drawings.
These software can also provide member connection details as per the
job setup in the program, generate bolt lists (shop and field),
advance bills of material (BoM) for advance ordering purposes, as well
as CNC data that can be transferred to and used by the shops'
equipment to cut material, punch holes, make copes & miters in
material.
The costs of these programs vary by brand, as well as their
functionality.
Detailing in a 3D environment using Tekla Structures allows error-free
collaboration during the fabrication and erection process. The
detailed Tekla 3D model visualizes the 'as-built' condition of the
structure – if the structure fits on screen, then it will fit on site
as well.
